CULTURAL VS. ETHNIC DIVERSITY
Palestinian Mrs. Hanan Ashrawi Ph.D., former PLO spokesperson appointed by Yassar Arafat, and former Israeli Prime Minister, Mr. Ehud Barak, discussed the Palestinian/Israeli conflict in October, 2006 (1). Her father was a cofounder of the PLO and her mother was a devout Lebanese Christian. It was a discussion, not a debate.
Dr. Ashrawi stated that “military force …… will not work in the Palestinian/Israeli conflict… it is an ‘occupation‘ that is the basis for the conflict“. Prime Minister Barak replied that the “conflict is not about occupation but is caused by revenge terrorism“. Ashrawi stated that “We are not two independent countries fighting each other, but instead we are living on top of each other in the same space“. Asked if there is any way to stop the terrorism and she said “it can be stopped by showing the terrorists that their way does not workâ€
