PROVIDENCE --
Rhode Island lawmakers are considering legislation aimed at preventing the hiring of illegal immigrants.
The House Committee on Labor is scheduled to hold hearings Tuesday on two bills designed to crack down on illegal immigration.
One would require state officials and state contractors to use the federal E-Verify program, a database for screening the immigration status of potential employees.
Another bill would also require all businesses with three or more employees to use E-Verify.
Supporters of the legislation say the state can reduce the number of illegal immigrants in Rhode Island by ensuring that employers aren't hiring them.
The bills have not been scheduled for a vote.
