Assembly to consider several immigration bills

The numerous immigration-related bills introduced by Rhode Island legislators this session reflect a continued ideological divide over illegal immigration, and guarantee another year of charged debate. Nearly all such legislation has failed for several years in a row, but in many cases, lawmakers are back for a second, third, and even a fourth try.

Major immigration-related bills introduced in Rhode Island General Assembly
H5167: Student Equal Economic Opportunity Act: Would identify students who are exempt from paying nonresident tuition at public universities, colleges or community colleges. Introduced by Representatives Diaz, Almeida, Slater, Ajello, and Dennigan
H5234: House resolution opposing the E-Verify program and urging Congress to halt its implementation. Introduced by Representatives Almeida, Williams, Diaz, and Slater.
H5298: The Rhode Island Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act of 2009: Would enact various laws designed to require state agencies to cooperate with federal immigration authorities in enforcing federal immigration laws and would amend various existing state statutes relative to eligibility for drivers licenses. Introduced by Representatives Palumbo, Corvese, Malik, Gablinske, and Jacquard.
H5436: Would exclude illegal immigrants from workers’ compensation coverage and impose penalties on employers who knowingly hire unauthorized workers. Introduced by Representatives Trillo, Gablinske, Brien and Palumbo.
H5444: Fair Employment Practices: Would make unlawful for an employer to request more or different documents than are required to comply with federal employment verification system. Introduced by Representatives Ferri, Ajello, Slater, M. Rice, and Diaz.
