SAN YSIDRO — A suspected human smuggling attempt left two men dead Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The men in their 20s were found in the back of a car that was headed into the U.S. at the San Ysidro Port of Entry about 2:40 p.m., officials said. The car had been pulled over for a secondary inspection.

San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman Lee Swanson said one person was dead when authorities arrived and the other was taken to a hospital, where that person later died.

The incident was "related to an alleged illegal entry attempt," said CBP spokeswoman Angelica De Cima.

Authorities were investigating the discovery and provided no additional information. It was originally reported the bodies were female.
