San Juan TX. police seize 1,700 rounds of 50-caliber ammo

San Juan Police Make Major Ammunition Seizure

    Reported by: Polo Sandoval
    Last Update: 1:10 pm

SAN JUAN - What started as a traffic stop Monday ended in a major ammunition seizure in San Juan.

San Juan police tried pulling over a pickup for a broken taillight. Moments later, officers found hundreds of rounds of ammunition. There were 1,700 rounds of 50-caliber ammunition. The ammo is belt-fed, which means it’s meant to be shot from turret-mounted weapons, much like the heavy artillery mounted on top of military tanks or hummers.

San Juan police say they believe the ammo was headed to Mexico. Now they're working to find out from where it came. They are working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and trying to talk to the two Mexican nationals that were in possession of the ammunition.

San Juan Police Say Ammunition Bust Is Wake-up Call

    Reported by: Polo Sandoval
    Last Update: 8:49 pm

SAN JUAN - Police say a huge load of high-powered ammunition taken off Valley streets is a wake-up call. If 1,700 rounds were stopped at the border, police say they wonder what manages to get across into Mexico.

"It’s pretty scary to have that much ammunition and that type of ammunition coming through the streets of San Juan," says San Juan police Sgt. Rolando Garcia

These kinds of seizures don't happen often: 1,700 rounds of.50-caliber belt-fed ammunition. Police found it in containers during a traffic stop.

"This is 1,700 rounds that could potentially kill police officers here in the United States as well as in Mexico. This is the stuff being used to fight off the local police departments and the Mexican military over there," says Garcia.

Garcia says this is reality. Cartels have firepower far exceeding what police officers count on.

"This is something that no Valley agency is equipped to go against or fight,â€
