Heath Shuler to challenge Pelosi for Minority Leader

Rep. Heath Shuler, former NFL quarterback, will tackle Rep. Nancy Pelosi for leadership positionBY Aliyah Shahid
    DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

    Saturday, November 13th 2010
Heath Shuler was sacked 46 times during his short career in the NFL. Now, he's trying to sack Nancy Pelosi.

The conservative North Carolina Democrat is expected to launch a long-shot bid beginning Sunday to unseat the more liberal Pelosi as head of the House's Democratic caucus, The Hill reported.

Pelosi has served as Speaker of the House in the last two Congresses, but with the stinging Republican takeover in the midterm elections, Democrats are set to be the minority party in the House when the new Congress begins in January.

There had been uncertainty over whether Pelosi would remain as the Democratic leader, but so far Shuler is the only representative to step forward to challenge her.

Most political insiders think Pelosi will easily win the vote to stay as head of the Democratic caucus. Only 18 out of nearly 200 House Democrats have said they won't support Pelosi as their leader.

Shuler, who had a short-lived career in the NFL, is scheduled to address his political plans on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday and MSNBC's "Morning Joe on Monday.

The 38-year-old acknowledged that he'd be facing an uphill battle.

"It will be very tough. It is probably a race we can't win," he told the Clay County Progress. "But we need a moderate voice in the Democratic Party."

That truly is great news. Health Shuler would be a much better Minority Leader for the Democrats. And you know what? If the Democrats don't agree and still vote in Pelosi, then the Blue-Dog Democrats should immediately defect and join the Republican Party because they have far more in common with Republicans than Pelosi Democrats.

They should read up on the history of the Republican Party, the things we've stood for and fought for since the day our party was formed from workers right to civil rights to women's rights to minimum wages, 40 hours work weeks, automatic overtime, OSHA, child labor laws, women's labor protections, equal pay for equal work, protected trade, immigration controls and the EPA, the interstate Highway System, the National Parks System, the Intercontinental Railroad, Brown Versus Board of Education and its enforcement, as well as the things we've fought against like slavery, discrimination, mandated income taxes and the Federal Reserve.

What American doesn't ant to be part of the party that's actually responsible for all the great advances and achievements of our nation? And not once have Republicans ever advertised these things, ever asked for a thank you, and never asked for a vote because of it. Most people don't even know what we've done.

Well, maybe now it's time they did, because we're getting ready to do a whole lot more.

Sure hope he wins. I think a lot of dems are really fed up with Pelosi. I noticed lots of political commercials before the election where dems would totally leave party affiliation out! They know Pelosi and Obama are liabilities!!

I heard on Friday either Rush, Beck, or Hannity (I have that CRS syndrome ) say that it would be better for conservatives if Pelosi stayed as minority leader, but I didn't get to listen to all of it, and I never understood the reasoning behind such a statement!! Maybe someone else heard it too and can explain????

I can't believe anyone with a brain would vote for Nancy Pelosi for anything other than village idiot, that is about the only thing she is truly qualified for.
