Two die, 4 hurt in U.S. 15 crash

POINT of ROCKS, Md. - Alcohol and driver error are suspected in a three-vehicle crash that killed two people and seriously injured four others Saturday on U.S. 15 at Md. 464, according to written releases from the Maryland State Police in Frederick.

Jorge Ronaldo Barrera Barrera, 25, and Jacobo Alay Godoy, 35, both of Centreville, Va., died when Barrera lost control of the Ford Contour he was driving.According to a press release, Barrera Barrera and his passengers, Godoy and Byron Noe Barrera, 32, of Hagerstown, were traveling north of Md. 464, when Barrera Barrera attempted to pass on the right side of vehicles that were stopped for a vehicle making a left turn. He lost control after a Geo Prizm, also heading south, slowed to make a right turn onto Md. 464, police said.

Barrera Barrera swerved the car to the left to avoid hitting the Prizm, but lost control and spun into the northbound lane, where a Chrysler minivan struck Barrera Barrera's car on the driver's side, police said.

After the collision with the minivan, the Ford Contour split in two and one of its pieces hit the Prizm, according to the release.

Barrera and Godoy were thrown from the car and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Byron Noe Barrera was flown to Washington County Hospital, according to the release.

The driver of the minivan was taken by ambulance to Washington County Hospital and a passenger in the minivan was flown there, according to the release. The Prizm driver was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital, police said.

According to police, Barrera, Barrera Barrera and Godoy had recently immigrated to the United States from Guatemala and were undocumented at the time of the accident. A Washington County Sheriff's Department spokesperson said Sunday night Barrera was being held on a $19,500 bond. Court records indicate he has a case pending from 2002 on charges of third-degree burglary, violation of a protection order and second-degree assault.

    Police identify crash victims
    Published on August 22, 2006

POINT OF ROCKS -- Three victims of a Saturday car crash were identified Monday by Maryland State Police.
None of the three men carried identification at the time of the three-car crash, state police Sgt. Bob Calo said. They were Guatemalan immigrants who had been in the United States less than two months.

Jorge Barrera Barrera, 25, driver of a Ford Contour, and back seat passenger Jacob Alay Godoy, 35, both of Centreville, Va., died in the crash.

A second passenger in the Contour, Byron Barrera, 32, of Hagerstown, was taken to Washington County Hospital with head, chest and abdominal injuries. Mr. Barrera has open warrants through the Washington County Sheriff's Office and the Hagerstown City Police.

By Monday evening Mr. Barrera had left the hospital, but police could not confirm if he had been arrested upon his release.

A friend of the men, who also lives in Centreville, came to Washington County Hospital and helped police identify the victims. All three men were undocumented immigrants so police have to rely on identity confirmation by the friend at this point, Sgt. Calo said.

"Identifications are coming from sources that are less reliable than government documents," he said, later adding, "That's as reliable as it can be right now."

Police believe drunk driving caused the crash. All three men were drunk at the time.

Three other people were treated at local hospitals for injuries suffered in the collision and had been released by Sunday night.

James Myer, 50, and William Myer, 53, both of Hanover, Pa., who were traveling in a Chrysler minivan, were taken to Washington County Hospital and discharged Sunday night. Patricia Patton, 47, of Boonsboro, who was driving a Geo Prism, was treated for lacerations at Frederick Memorial Hospital and discharged by Sunday night.

Jorge Barrera was driving the Ford Contour south on U.S. 15, north of Md. 464. He began to pass on the right side of vehicles that were stopped on U.S. 15 for a vehicle making a left turn onto Md. 464. Ms. Patton was traveling south on U.S. 15 and was slowing to make a right turn onto Md. 464. Mr. Barrera swerved the Contour to the left to avoid hitting the back of Ms. Patton's Prism. He lost control and began to spin into the northbound lane.

James Myer was driving north on U.S. 15, and struck the Ford Contour on the driver's side. The Contour split into two pieces. One of the pieces struck Ms. Patton's Prism.

Jorge Barrera and Mr. Godoy were ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene.

Jorge Barrera appears to have been at fault. Any additional charges would be filed after the investigation is complete, Sgt. Calo said.
