EASLEY -- A Clemson city councilwoman who has made a crusade out of fighting illegal immigration found an attentive crowd that listened quietly and sometimes nodded in agreement in Easley on Monday night.
Margaret Thompson told about 60 people packed into Easley City Council chambers that contractors are losing business because some companies are using illegal aliens.
Her solution: "If they don't have a job, they won't come here."
Thompson pushed for a law earlier this year to keep Clemson from doing business with companies that hire illegal aliens. The Clemson City Council declined to pass such a law, citing a recent federal court decision that could trump any local decision.
Since then, Thompson has taken her fight on the road with town meetings in Liberty, Seneca and now Easley.
"If you want to come to this country and you do it the right way, I welcome you with open arms," Thompson said.

Good for Councilwoman Thomas. Let's congratulate her and urge the other council members to support her effort.
