SC-Former chicken plant workers plead guilty in immigration
Former chicken plant workers plead guilty in immigration case
By Paul Alongi • STAFF WRITER • August 19, 2008
Seven former Columbia Farms employees pleaded guilty in federal court in Greenville today to charges that they unlawfully used identifications of other people.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Lance Crick said that immigration and customs enforcement agents in Atlanta asked Greenville agents to investigate Columbia Farms on Rutherford Road on Nov. 30, 2007. The agents asked for the plant employee I-9 forms and found that the employees had used other people's alien numbers or social security numbers. The seven defendants ranged in age from 27 to 38 with education levels between the sixth grade and 12th grade.
U.S. District Judge Henry Herlong said they face two years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine. Sentencing will be held later.
