Who are the compassionate ones in illegals debate?

I am sick of pro-illegal immigrant people acting like they are the kind and compassionate ones and border control advocates are racist nativists. (Tom Brokaw and Geraldo Rivera are two.)

They say that our economy needs these workers. They say Americans don't want these jobs. What about the line out the door for the Swift meat plant jobs after the illegals were rounded up?

(Column continues below)

What kind of compassion is it to, in effect, say to the illegals, "Even if you are dirt poor and your family is starving, pay a smuggler thousands of dollars to smuggle you into the U.S. Take your chances of dying in the desert or being raped or robbed at the border by criminals who prey on these smuggled groups. Or risk drowning in the Rio Grande. Travel in the back of an 18-wheeler or an overcrowded van and then hide in stash houses holding 40 people with only one bathroom.

If you survive all of that, we will thank you by giving you a low-paying job and threaten to call the authorities if you give your employer any trouble.

This is compassion? In addition to all of that, the pro-illegal immigrant employers agree that they are willing to take the chance that street gangs, murderers, drug dealers and sex-ring traffickers are among the people coming in, as well as people who despise the U.S. and all that it stands for.

But that is OK because we need cheap labor.

So what is to be done?

1. Change the system so that the wait to legally enter is not 10 years long (90 days would be better). Allow all who come in legally to apply for citizenship after seven years of being law abiding.

2. Track the visa entrants and make sure they surrender their student or tourist visa when it expires. I have read estimates that 40 percent of illegals just overstay their visa and no one keeps track of when or if they leave.

3. Deport all within 24 hours of being caught. Use military planes if necessary. (NO court hearings.)

4. Send more personnel to foreign embassies to speed up the legal immigration process.

5. Jail employers if they have not run Social Security numbers through a database. Hire the head of Mastercard to figure out how to keep track of who comes in and who goes out. If they know whether my card is legal, they can figure out if a Social Security number is legal and if the employer entered the right pin number when they checked for valid numbers. If they have run a check and accepted a stolen number, they are off the hook, because they made the good faith effort to check.

6. Expose Mexican corruption and give them no more peace than we gave South Africa during apartheid. Expose the heartless way they treat their poor while their very rich line their driveways with solid marble. (Yes, I have seen it with my own eyes).

7. Shut down both borders and tell every illegal (through media announcements) that they have 90 days to get out of the country. After that time, all will be deported if caught and denied re-entry.

8. All who leave and report to their country's embassy upon return will not be held accountable for having been here illegally and can apply to come back after passing a criminal background check. Accept millions, if necessary, but only if they promise to learn English and obey the law.

9. Set up English classes in every public school and public library that receives federal funds.

10. Pass federal legislation that makes it a crime not to report illegals, just as it is to not report child abuse. Then empower law enforcement at all levels (city, county, state) to enforce the immigration laws, not just the feds.

11. Pass a law that children hold the same citizenship as their parents. And yes, send U.S. citizen children back with their parents to reapply.

This mess can be fixed, but the chambers of commerce like to have employees that can be intimidated, and Mexico likes to ship out their poor.

There is nothing humane about the current system, and nothing racist about controlling our borders. If the pro-illegals don't believe it, then propose legislation that eliminates any laws about immigrants and say that anyone from anywhere in the world that can get here can stay forever.

It would be like when Republicans proposed an immediate pullout from Iraq. It was a brilliant stunt that made the anti-wars stand up and be counted.

No one really believes in unlimited immigration. They want all the burden of getting here put on the backs of poor foreigners who pay smugglers. They are the evil ones, not the Minutemen border protectors.
