MUNCIE - A couple who police said sold pills within a city block of the Ball State University Police Department and a woman who allegedly smuggled more than two pounds of cocaine from Mexico were arrested during several narcotics investigations in the past five days.

Police Wednesday night confiscated almost 100 ecstasy pills, cocaine, marijuana and methadone from the apartment of Tiffany Bays, 19, and her boyfriend, Evon L. Smith, 24, at 2113 W. Washington St., Apt. D., according to Muncie-Delaware County Drug Task Force investigator Jess Neal.

"Being that bold and brazen to deal across from a police station, I would say this is a significant arrest," Neal said.

Having a substantial narcotics bust as Ball State students move back in should send a message to drug dealers that university, city and county police are serious about keeping the campus clean, Delaware County Sheriff George Sheridan said.

The Ball State Police Department was aware of the drug house, Neal said, and cooperated with the Drug Task Force until they could build a case against the couple.

Bays was arrested on four class A felony drug charges and Smith was arrested on a class A felony possession of cocaine charge.

"Bonus" arrests: The Drug Task Force made two surprising "bonus" arrests when they apprehended Smith and Bays during a planned traffic stop Wednesday, Neal said.

An agent of the DTF purchased drugs off Bays and Smith earlier that night and the two were arrested at Gilbert and Nichols street as they left their apartment in a car, Neal said.

While DTF officers were conducting the traffic stop, Michael B. Pollitt, 20, New Castle, disregarded a stop sign in his vehicle and nearly ran over an officer, Neal said.

He then stopped his vehicle a block away and, to the surprise of police, walked back to apologize, Neal said.

Police said he and a passenger, Luke E. Kendall, were under the influence of prescription drugs and were arrested at the scene.

In other news:

Smuggling: Police arrested illegal immigrant Maria Delosangeles on allegations that she smuggled a kilo of cocaine into Delaware County from Mexico.

A kilo is a brick of about 2.2 pounds of cocaine and is worth several tens of thousands of dollars depending on how it is distributed.

Delosangeles was arrested at Ind. 3 and 29th street after she sold the drugs to an agent of the Drug Task Force for $23,000, police said.

Police said their investigation was still not over and they did not disclose many details.

The drug task force usually seizes three or four kilo bricks in a year, Neal said.
