"Several groups" in the caravan have entered the country illegally since Friday
The Latest: US may tell asylum-seekers to wait in Mexico

TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) - The Latest on a caravan of Central Americans seeking asylum in the United States (all times local):
5 p.m.
U.S. authorities say asylum-seekers in a caravan of Central Americans may have to wait in Mexico if the nation's busiest border crossing in San Diego reaches capacity.
Pete Flores, U.S. Customs and Border Protection's San Diego field office director, said waiting time will depend on circumstances at the San Ysidro border crossing. He has said the port can hold about 300 people in temporary cells.
About 400 people, many traveling as families, have arrived in the Mexican border city Tijuana in a monthlong caravan from southern Mexico. Many plan to seek asylum at the San Diego crossing on Sunday.
The Border Patrol says "several groups" in the caravan have entered the country illegally since Friday by climbing a dilapidated metal fence nearby.
It declined to say how many people.

Hope they didn't catch & release them as usual. Why is there a dilapidated metal fence w/o a guard to stop entry? This is an announced border crash event in the news for weeks.
Wait for what in mexico - to enter US? They are supposed to seek asylum in the 1st country entered - mexico. Not valid for asylum seek in the US - it is their 2nd or maybe more country of entry. This nonsense has to stop. These people coming in for years are nothing but trouble and will takeover America - it maybe to late now unless all illegals and their kids GET OUTTA HERE! No papers, no stay!Last edited by artist; 04-29-2018 at 12:19 AM.

Border Patrol: Central American asylum-seekers attempted to cross border illegally
April 28, 2018
KUSI Newsroom
SAN YSIDRO (KUSI) — Some of the Central American asylum-seekers traveling with a migrant caravan have attempted to illegally enter the United States near San Ysidro in the last 24 hours, federal authorities said Saturday.
The migrants tried Friday and Saturday to climb over the border fence on either side of the San Ysidro Port of Entry, Customs and Border Protection Chief Patrol Agent Rodney S. Scott said. Young children — and in one case, a pregnant woman — were detected among people trying to enter the U.S. through “a dark, treacherous canyon that is notorious for human and drug smuggling,”
he said.
No estimate was given for how many people from the caravan attempted to cross the border illegally this time, but about 350 people planned to try to enter the country at the San Ysidro Port of Entry Sunday, the Washington Post reported Thursday.
The caravan has been making national headlines for the past month after catching the attention of President Donald Trump. It first began with about 1,000 people March 25 in the Mexican city of Tapachula, near the Guatemala border, drawing comments from Trump as evidence of what he and his aides portrayed as a significant threat, the Post reported.
Scott said it was “unconscionable” that children were being smuggled into the country in what he referred to as dangerous conditions.
In the statement, he warned the remaining caravan members to follow the law.
“If anyone has encouraged you to illegally enter the United States, or make any false statements to U.S. government officials, they are giving you bad advice and they are placing you and your family at risk,” he said. “We are a very welcoming country but just like your own house, we expect everyone to enter through our front door and answer questions honestly.
On a national level that front door is the Ports of Entry. If you enter the United States at any place other than a Port of Entry it is a crime.”

Some from Central American caravan have entered U.S. illegally, feds say
Pauline Repard Contact Reporter
April 28, 2018 5:10 PM
Some number of people associated with the Central American migrant caravan, which is stopped in Tijuana, have crossed into the United States illegally in the past 24 hours, federal officials said Saturday.
A pregnant woman and some children as young as 4 were detected entering the U.S. through a canyon that authorities described, in a statement, as dark, treacherous and “notorious for human and drug smuggling.”
They were said to have climbed over a dilapidated scrap metal border fence on either side of the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
The statement was issued Saturday afternoon by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

No information was given on the number of people caught entering the U.S. illegally or what became of them.
It also was not clear if the statement’s phrase “people associated with” the caravan meant people who actually had taken part in the bus trek from Central America, through Mexico, to seek asylum in the U.S.
Members of the caravan are expected to ask for asylum on Sunday. Caravan members interested in requesting asylum spent Friday and Saturday at legal orientations to understand their rights and what to expect after they enter the U.S. port of entry.
“Individuals of the ‘caravan’ seeking asylum or other similar claims should seek protections in the first safe country they enter, including Mexico,” Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott said in the statement.
“To anyone that is associated with this caravan, think before you act,” Scott continued. “If anyone has encouraged you to illegally enter the United States, or make any false statements to U.S. government officials, they are giving you bad advice and they are placing you and your family at risk.”
Pete Flores, the Customs and Border Protection director of field operations, said in the statement that pedestrians at the San Ysidro Port of Entry will be divided into two lines — those with, and without, travel documents for legal entry.
If the facility becomes overcrowded with those who have no entry documents, they may need to wait in Mexico, Flores said.
“All travelers will be processed in accordance with appropriate detention and removal enforcement protocols,” Flores said.
