Schwarzenegger: Illegal immigrants not to blame for budget mess

    By Kevin Yamamura
Published 12:06 pm PDT Wednesday, March 26, 2008

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, responding to the mother of a Republican state legislator, said Wednesday it would be a "big mistake" to blame illegal immigrants for the state's looming $8 billion budget problem.

The Republican governor was in San Luis Obispo to pitch his budget proposal to local officials and business leaders when he was asked by Diane Blakeslee, mother of Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee, R-San Luis Obispo, how the state should handle fiscal burdens created by illegal immigrants.

"There is, you know, always a time like this where you start pointing the finger at various different elements of what creates the budget mess, and, you know, some may point the finger at illegal immigrants," Schwarzenegger said. "I can guarantee you, I have been now four years in office in Sacramento, I don't think that illegal immigration has created the mess that we are in."

The governor's comments came a day after Assembly Republicans announced a package of 20 bills they said would help California reduce the "negative impact" that illegal immigrants have on the state budget. Included are proposals to repeal a law enabling undocumented students from paying in-state college tuition and demand more money from the federal government for housing illegal immigrants in state prisons.

Schwarzenegger said he believes the United States should pursue immigration reform and have tougher border controls. But he added that blaming illegal immigrants "because we have a budget problem would be a big mistake. I think we have to look at ourselves in Sacramento. We in Sacramento have the responsibility to come up with a coherent budget system, and we haven't done that."

The governor is seeking a long-term budget fix that would build a "rainy-day fund" whenever the state has a surplus in revenues. He has spent the last two weeks traveling to different cities to discuss the budget and ask local residents to pressure their legislators into early negotiations.

He can "guarantee" he " doesn't THINK" this mess was created by illegals?

He's right, it was created by ANCHOR BABIES of Illegal aliens, who got themselves elected into office and are enabling the freeloading.

Hey Arnie, why not we enforce the laws, deport all illegals and see how the budget goes, hmmmm?

Ok, say whatever you want governor. You can blame them or you cannot. However, you cannot deny California is in a fiscal emergency. You have said this yourself. In addition, you know the tremendous financial burden that illegal invaders are to this state. The numbers are there in balck and white.

You cannot in good faith continue to ignore the connection. To do so is negligent on your part, and some may even argue arises to professional misconduct.

You must address the issue by removing this outrageous burden to this state. You are obligated to do so!

Illegals aren't to blame for the WHOLE budget shortfall, just some of it. The rest is caused by a stupid Governor.

I cannot believe how many apologists are insisting that illegal aliens do not receive welfare benefits!

YES, THEY DO! If two illegal aliens have babies, who are given citizenship, EACH baby receives welfare, medicaid, WIC, housing assistance! How do they figure daddy is going to support mommy and 2-8 anchors on his $2-3 hour "salary"??? Let's not forget the free K-12 education they're not paying for either!

Family of 10, with only ONE working adult making less than minimum wage = JACKPOT!!!!

Illegal aliens are negative net taxpayers and as they bring in more friends and family they are an open ended unfunded mandate. While they alone are not the entire financial problem that the state has they sure do not help.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

He got that line from LaRaza as did Obama, "it would be a big mistake to blame illegal aliens". Somebody please see he gets the cost of illegals on his state taxpayers.

Funny when they ask this question the illegals are not a problem but when they want reimbursed from the feds the costs are due to illegal alien....sorry Arnold you can not have it both ways!!

    From FAIR:

The Costs of Illegal Immigration to Californians: Executive Summary

Analysis of the latest Census data indicates that California's illegal immigrant population is costing the state's taxpayers more than $10.5 billion per year for education, medical care and incarceration. Even if the estimated tax contributions of illegal immigrant workers are subtracted, net outlays still amount to nearly $9 billion per year. The annual fiscal burden from those three areas of state expenditures amounts to about $1,183 per household headed by a native-born resident.

**My note: the estimated Calfornia budget shortfall is currently about $16 billion; the net outlay to illegal aliens totals $9 billion. So if illegals weren't in California, the state's budget deficit would be about 56% less.
