Sheriff: Shooting seems "random" Suspects possibly

ADAM BELLabell@charlotteobserver.comThe Wednesday shooting of a Cabarrus County Sheriff's Deputy patrol car appears to be a random act, Sheriff Brad Riley said Thursday morning.
Concord police have arrested two people after shots were fired into the car, which was parked in front of the deputy's Concord home.

Police said they arrested 26-year-old Jose Cortazar Torralba of Allison Street, Concord, last night around 7. He has been charged with injury to personal property, possession of a firearm by a felon, altering the serial number on the firearm and discharging a firearm in the city.
He is in Cabarrus County Jail under a $100,000 bond.

"It was just a spur-of-the-moment thing," Riley said.
Torralba's girlfriend also was arrested. Yadira Hernandez Melo, 16, of Sunderland Road, Concord, was charged with resisting, obstruct and delay, city spokeswoman Annette Privette said Thursday morning. Melo is in county jail under a $2,500 bond.

The shooting occurred near Kerr Street in Concord just after 5 p.m., according to the sheriff's office. No one was injured.
Police are working with immigration authorities to see if the couple was in the country illegally.

Authorities are withholding the deputy's name for security reasons; Riley said the deputy has been on the force for more than 20 years.
This summer, two deputies' homes were shot up in Catawba County. No one was injured in those cases, but the
shooting rattled law enforcement agencies until they arrested suspects.
