    Sheriff's Office Arrests 12 for Human Smuggling

    PHOENIX - The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office arrested 12 people suspected of being in the country illegally on Monday night.

    The 12 illegal immigrants admitted they agreed to pay between $1,000 and $3,000 to gain entry into the United States.

    Their destinations included New York, Florida and Ohio.

    They are now all facing felony human smuggling charges.

    The arrests are part of Operation Desert Sky, which launched on March 30. To date, 219 people have been arrested -- 182 of whom were in the country illegally.
