It's not something new, but it does create controversy anytime it happens. Whenever day laborers gather at the Good Shepherd of the Hills Church in Cave Creek, the Sonoran News Newspaper takes pictures.
The conservative paper does not hide from its agenda, often criticizing those who cater to illegal immigrants. Lately though, the publisher has been taking pictures in response to a federal judge's decision to strike down the town's anti-solicitation ordiance, allowing people to gather at the church and look for work.
Publisher Don Sorchych isn't going after the laborers, he's taking pictures of people who pick up illegal immigrants for work.
In many cases, the pictures show the license plate numbers of people who drive up and pick up workers. In the latest edition, several pictures of car appear, one of them a BMW.
Sorchych says he's exposing those people because they're breaking the law and he hashave plenty of support, but a lot of people don't like it, calling it an invasion of privacy.
Father Glenn Jenks who used to run a day labor center at the church says he can't stop Sorchych from doing what he does, he just thinks it creates tension in an already racially divided town.
Jenks' day labor center shut down in January after Maricopa County Sheriffs deputies came to town arresting illegal immigrants.
