Shockingly dyslexic immigration priorities of the political class, including Republicans, are on display this week

    September 26, 2019

    Daniel Horowitz

At a time when our country is flooded with illegal aliens, schools are becoming mini-United Nations with American towns paying for its cost, dangerous criminal aliens are running rampant, cartels control our border, almost every major city is harboring illegal alien murderers and sex offenders, and legal immigration is more expansive and dysfunctional than ever, what part of this issue do elite Republicans feel passionate about? Are they rushing bills to the floor to deal with sanctuary cities and illegal alien drunk drivers or the cost of thousands of Central Americans being foisted upon small town schools? Nope … They are blocking border security, denying there is an emergency, and seeking to give visa pork handouts to the big tech special interest groups that broke our system.

A yearlong unprecedented illegal immigration crisis has not prompted a single piece of legislation from Republicans. Yet, the minute the left-wing Silicon Valley companies come a callin’, Republicans join Democrats by ramming through a major complex change to an already-dysfunctional visa system without holding any hearings on its consequences.

Everyone knows what our immigration system should look like. It should only be high skilled – real high skilled – based on a merit points system, not just for education, but also for patriotic assimilation. Then, once they are here, they should be free to work anywhere. Instead, we have a system that is mainly unskilled chain migration with the “skilled” portion of it being monopolized by visa pork to specific corporations for workers who aren’t even that high skilled, mainly entry-level IT jobs for tech companies. The bill that was rushed through the House and is now being slammed on the floor of the Senate without a hearing simply exacerbates this system.

On July 10, the Democrat-controlled House passed HR 1044, the Orwellian-named “Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act of 2019,” which abolished the per-country annual cap on employment-based green cards. Less than one-third of Republicans opposed the legislation. The bill does the opposite of fairness because the existing broken H-1B non-immigrant visa program is monopolized by not very high skilled Indian workers, and those would be the people flooding the green cards for the next 10 years. USCIS estimates that if this bill is enacted, Indian workers will control 90% of all employment-based green cards for the next 10 years.

Thus, at a time when we need a reset bottom to craft a system giving green cards to the most highly skilled people throughout the world (while eliminating almost all other immigration), this bill steps on the gas pedal to shunt through the existing lower-skilled people from one particular country to gobble up all the green cards. In turn, this will allow the same Silicon Valley companies to then refill the existing pipeline of H1-B, OPT, and other similar categories, many of them uncapped, with the same people from the same countries going to the same corporations.

In other words, the same way our family-based visa system is broken because it allows immigrants to choose who is brought in based on family ties and not Americans choosing the best fit, the employment-based system allows a handful of the most powerful liberal companies to bring in the people they want for their jobs with no regard for the rest of the country.

What this does is hand our immigration system over to the giant tech companies so they can flood even more $60,000 jobs with people they can pay $50,000. Ironically, it actually boxes out the more truly high-skilled immigrants being sought by smaller companies from other countries who are not built into the visa mill pipeline created over the years by Big Tech for Indian workers. It’s not to say that we don’t have more specialized workers from India as well, but the dysfunctional H1-B system has flooded the “high skilled” visas with entry level tech jobs that could be done by Americans. By chewing up all the green cards on those in the H-1B system, it will make it impossible to bring in truly high skilled people.

Talk about foreign influence! This is an India-first bill.
Everyone knows what is going to happen if this bill passes. They will pocket the massive expansion of Indian low-to-mid-level workers and then come back crying about the inevitable problems it creates by boxing out other companies, applicants from other countries, and higher skilled immigrants. The result? Another bill to expand immigration even more by busting the macro cap from the existing record levels without any effort to cut any other part of the dead wood in the immigration system.

Yet, shockingly, Sen. Mike Lee, Utah, asked for unanimous consent to pass this bill (S.386) last week, which he is co-sponsoring with Sen. Kamala Harris, bypassing any committee process.
This bill makes no sense from any philosophical standpoint on immigration other than the fact that it’s satisfying the companies with the most political clout, such as Apple, Amazon, Google, and Facebook. Then again, that is how our entire immigration politics has worked in recent years.

I created a list of 15 no-brainer ideas to protect the security, sovereignty, identity, and fiscal burden of American taxpayers amidst this illegal immigration crisis. They are simple ideas that government owes us in order to fulfill prior commitments or to protect current laws not being enforced. But there is no rush to push a single one of these ideas. They’ll say, “we need to go through the committee process.”

Yet, the minute Big Tech asks for a complicated change to the entire employer-based visa system, they will attempt to pass it without any transparent process. The reason is because American taxpayers have no lobby or political action committee … or foreign influencers on their behalf. Illegal aliens or big tech are what members of both parties respond to.

Where is the action from these very same senators on illegal immigration? Well, actually, 11 Republicans joined with the Democrats to reject Trump’s emergency request to build a wall with defense funding. The same people who ignore the constant judicial threat to congressional power, which is quite literally the impetus for this border crisis in the first place with California judges nullifying laws unanimously passed by Congress, feign concern over executive power grabs against congressional appropriations. These same people also ignore executive abuse of discretion against congressional immigration laws that have creates so many illegal alien loopholes.

Then again, if you are looking for consistency in public policy, the only place you will find it is in special interest money. After all, there is no money behind abstract concepts affecting the whole of the people like sovereignty, security, and an un-balkanized civil society.

But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
