Shots Fired from Tijuana Toward Agents in U.S.: USBP

The United States Border Patrol said shots were fired from Mexico toward an agent patrolling in U.S. territory Wednesday afternoon.

A U.S. Border Patrol spokesperson said the shots were fired near the Colonia Libertad in Tijuana, about one-and-a-half miles east of the San Ysidro Port of Entry, at around 1:30 p.m.

BP agents reported the gunfire to law enforcement in Tijuana and, according to Border Patrol, officers detained two suspects who were in possession of a firearm.

Tijuana Police Chief Mario Martinez told Telemundo 20 that officers responded to reports of gunfire in a canyon in the area but did not make any arrests.

Martinez could not confirm if any shots were directed at agents in the U.S.

No injuries were reported, Border Patrol said.

No other information was available.

SAN DIEGO — Border Patrol agents working in the area just east of San Ysidro heard shots fired on the Mexican side of the border Wednesday, a local spokesman for the federal agency said.

No one was hit or hurt in the early afternoon incident, Acting Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Theron Francisco said in a statement issued Thursday morning. He said Mexican authorities later caught two people with a gun.

He was not able to say whether the shots had been intentionally fired at the U.S. officers. However, Mario Martinez, Tijuana’s chief of police said that the incident was linked to a house in Colonia Libertad, and did not target U.S. agents.

Francisco, the Border Patrol spokesman, said the incident happened about 1:30 p.m. as agents were on patrol roughly 1.5 miles east of San Ysidro when they head shots fired south of the border, near Colonia Libertad.

One of the agents spotted two people walking on the south side of the border fence, carrying what looked to be a handgun, Francisco said.

The agency notified Mexican law enforcement authorities, who Francisco said “later apprehended two suspects in possession of a firearm.” However, Martinez said that his agency had no one in custody.
