C.B.P. outbound inspection discovers guns and parts

    C.B.P. News Release

CBP Officers Seize $1.5 Million in Cocaine, 3 Shotguns at Laredo Port of Entry

    (Tuesday, March 17, 2009)

Laredo, Texas – Alert U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Laredo port of entry on Monday seized $1.5 million in cocaine and three shotguns, a rifle barrel and assorted gun parts in two separate, unrelated enforcement actions.

The cocaine seizure occurred about 11:20 p.m., on Monday, March 16, at the Lincoln-Juarez Bridge. A CBP officer working ahead of the primary booths referred a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero driven by John Scott Wiggins, a 46-year-old male U.S. citizen from Houston for a secondary inspection. At secondary, a non-intrusive imaging system scan indicated anomalies within the rocker panel area. CBP officers conducted an intensive examination of the area and discovered 18 bundles containing a total of nearly 48 pounds of cocaine stuffed in the rocker panels.

CBP officers in Laredo find shotguns and rifle parts during a routine vehicle examination.

The cocaine has an estimated street value of $1.5 million. CBP officers arrested Wiggins and turned him over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents who investigated the seizure and processed him on federal drug charges. CBP officers seized the narcotics and the vehicle.

Also on Monday, about 12 hours earlier, CBP officers conducting outbound (southbound) inspections at Gateway to the Americas Bridge referred a 2001 Chevy Chevy driven by a 46-year-old Mexican citizen from Nuevo Laredo for a secondary inspection. The driver gave a negative declaration for currency in excess of $10,000, weapons or ammunition.

During the examination, CBP officers opened the vehicle hood and discovered white packages in the engine area. An intensive examination of the packages revealed three disassembled shotguns, among them a Berretta Trident 12-gauge shotgun, a Browning GTI 12-gauge shotgun and a BC Miroku MK-70 12-gauge shotgun. CBP officers also found a Blaster .243 rifle barrel, two Perazzi MX 2000 receivers and other assorted gun parts. The shotguns and parts had an estimated value of $18,608. No immediate arrest was made but an investigation by ICE special agents is continuing.

“Our officers maintained their alertness, utilized their inspection skills, experience and made two impressive interceptions in both the inbound and outbound environments,â€

It looks like C.B.P. has already stepped up out bound inspections looking for guns and money going south.

We get to keep all of the illegal cash they find, kind of like a tax on illegal drug sales.
