    Slain Woman Also Sexually Assaulted

    Slain woman also sexually assaulted
Suspect, in U.S. illegally, admitted hitting Bellevue resident, police say

    By CHRISTIAN BOTTORFF
    Staff Writer

The 74-year-old woman who police say was beaten to death last month by her next-door neighbor inside her Bellevue home also was sexually assaulted during the attack, Metro police said yesterday.

When Metro detectives found Mary Sadler's bloody and battered body, there was evidence that clearly showed a sexual assault, said Don Aaron, Metro police spokesman.

"At this stage of the case, I really can't be more specific or explicit than that, other than to say there was obvious evidence of a sexual assault," Aaron said. "I would expect that if other charges are to result, they would occur at the grand jury level."

The suspect in the killing, Ivan Moreno, 30, is from Mexico and is in this country illegally, police said. He was arrested on a charge of criminal homicide. Police say Moreno admitted striking Sadler after he went to her home at 229 Cross Timbers Drive to get money.

Police declined to say whether Moreno admitted to a sexual assault.

"He has acknowledged being responsible for inflicting the injuries to Mrs. Sadler," Aaron said Thursday without elaborating.

Moreno's public defenders, James McNamara and Amy Harwell, did not return voice-mail messages left yesterday at their Nashville office.

Police also found a crumpled $40 check that apparently was written by Sadler to Moreno. The check's memo line indicated that it was a loan for Moreno's daughter. Police found the check crumpled up in the grass between the two driveways on Cross Timbers Drive after they discovered Sadler's body.

During a preliminary hearing, Moreno's wife of 12 years, Norma Angeles, testified that Aug. 21, the day of Sadler's death, was their daughter's birthday, but that they hadn't bought her any presents.

Sadler's death is among several high-profile crimes in recent months that have led some activists to urge local officials to crack down on illegal immigration.

Aaron said that the alleged sexual assault was not believed to be the motive for the killing. •

Here's just another example of someone who is in our country illegally. They receive the benefits of our country but never contribute to the good of our country. A taker, not a giver. What do we get? He sexually assaults murders one of our own, an elderly U.S. citizen. Now we have to keep him up and sustain him in our jails supported by our tax dollars. Then he's assigned a public defender, who is also paid with our tax dollars, to attempt to get him off for the crime he committed. Now, we won't pack and ship him home because he faces a murder sentence. Anyway about it, he becomes our problem, for years and years at our expense. Now multiply this thousands of times for all the same group of illegals. I'm not against someone seeking freedom and wanting to come to the United States legally and abiding by our laws and paying taxes just like me. But what we are allowing is for these illegals to bring their problems here and their problem becomes our problem except worse. This is just another example of how our tax dollars are at work.

I'm not defending his actions but how do you know, PMC, that he was ONLY "a taker, not a giver".

Immigrants who come here (legally or otherwise) have to get a job to live. He was paying taxes and social security for which he'd never see on penny.

To tar and feather ALL immigrants as being non-contributors to our society ignores the vast majority who keep this economy of ours going. Heck, if it hadn't been for the immigrants coming to Nashville, we wouldn't have seen the growth and prosperity of the last ten years. The football stadium wouldn't have been built. Most of the new homes wouldn't have been built. The list goes on.

This anti-immigrant rhetoric thrown about by the likes of Limbaugh and Steve Gill is factually wrong and racially motivated. Don't hear them complaining about Europoeans immigrating of which there are illegals I'm sure.

Based on population growth, illegal immigration has not risen any for the past twenty years. That comes from a Federal Government-sponsored university study.

YOU KNOW, YOU TALK ABOUT THE ILLEGALLS DOING ALL THE WORK TO BUILD OUR CITY. OUR CITY WOULD HAVE BEEN BUILT, BUT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN BY MEN LIKE MY HUSBAND. A LEGALL AMERICAN MAN. BUT NO, THE MEXICANS GET THE JOBS, BECAUSE THEY CHARGE LESS, THEY DONT HAVE TO CONSIDER TAXES, WORKMANS COMP INS. OR ANY OF THE OTHER THINGS MY HUSBAND HAS TO CONSIDER WHEN BIDDING A JOB. THESE PEOPLE ARE TAKING FOOD FROM OUR TABLE. SMALL BUISNNESSES IN THIS AREA ARE STRUGGLING BECAUSE OF ALL THE MEXICANS TAKING THE WORK. THEY ARE ALL RELATED, AND SEND THE MONEY BACK TO MEXICO TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR FAMILIES THERE, SO ITS NOT EVEN GETTING SPENT IN OUR COUNTRY. I'M ORIGINALLY FROM CALIFORNIA, SO I KNOW WHERE THIS IS HEADED, WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT QUICK OR THEY WILL TRY TO "TAKE OVER NASHVILLE" JUST LIKE THEY ARE TRYING TO CLAIM CALIFORNIA.

I have nothing against immigrants, if you come here legally I say welcome to America. It's those who are sneaking in illegally who are the problem. The only tax they pay is sales tax, that doesn't cover the cost of health care, education, welfare, and law enforcement that has risen because of illegals. If our government would simply enforce our laws and keep illegals out, this woman would be alive today. How many more people do illegals have to kill for our government to address this issue?
