    U.S. Border Patrol Weekly Blotter: December 18 – December 24

    (12/24/2008)Border Patrol agents seized over 4,747 pounds of marijuana valued at $3,797,920. Agents arrested 5 criminal aliens. There were 5 rocking incidents.

    *This overview is compiled from incidents reported to the Office of Border Patrol and is not intended to reflect all Border Patrol enforcement actions. Most arrests and seizures fail to meet the requirements for mandatory reporting to the Office of Border Patrol.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,132 pounds of marijuana valued at $905,840 near Patagonia, Arizona. An agent and his Border Patrol canine were performing foot patrol duties when the canine alerted to a bundle of marijuana hidden near a trail. Agents searched the area and discovered an additional 22 bundles of marijuana. No subjects were arrested.

    El Paso Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Mexico near El Paso, Texas. The subject was encountered near the Rio Grande River with a plastic bag over his head, bound with a rope around his knees, and handcuffed behind his back. The subject stated that he had been kidnapped and tortured in Mexico, and after regaining consciousness, fled from his captives and inadvertently crossed the Rio Grande River into the United States. The subject was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

    New Orleans Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested a national of Morocco while conducting transportation checks in Gulfport, Mississippi. The subject was unlawfully in possession of over 135 credit card numbers with associated account information.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents reported that the driver of a 2007 GMC pickup swerved toward an agent who was working vehicle traffic near Federal Route 15 in Chui Chui, Arizona. The agent was attempting to stop the vehicle using a controlled tire deflation device when the driver swerved at the agent. The agent fired their weapon at the driver in order to stop the threat, then took evasive action to avoid being struck by the vehicle. The assailant drove away, and the vehicle was subsequently found abandoned in a ditch. No injuries or property damage were reported.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents reported than an illegal alien from Guatemala, who was already in Border Patrol custody, had a positive criminal history for child abuse. The subject had been released earlier from a local medical facility following injuries sustained in a vehicle accident south of Arizona City, Arizona.

    El Paso Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested two illegal aliens from Mexico near Deming, New Mexico. The subjects claimed to have been assaulted and robbed of $350 dollars in Juarez, Mexico. One subject appeared to have minor injuries, and was offered medical treatment. The subject declined medical attention.

    Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,161 pounds of marijuana valued at $928,640, and arrested four illegal aliens from Mexico, including one juvenile, near Brownsville, Texas. Agents observed one adult alien and the juvenile loading suspected bundles of marijuana onto the bed of a dump truck near the Rio Grande River. The subjects had attempted to conceal the narcotics with dirt inside the dump truck.

    Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,318 pounds of marijuana valued at $1,054,400, a 1999 Chevrolet 3500 flatbed pick-up, and arrested a United States Citizen at the traffic checkpoint in Sarita, Texas. The subject presented himself and his pick-up for inspection and a Border Patrol canine alerted to the pick-up. A subsequent inspection revealed 109 bundles of marijuana hidden inside 55-gallon drums.

    Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents reported that an unidentified subject on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande River fired two rounds from a rifle at agents near Abram, Texas. As agents intercepted a raft with three occupants, several unidentified subjects on the Mexican riverbank threw rocks at them. Agents attempted to leave the area and they observed a subject shoulder a rifle and fire the two rounds at them. An agent returned fire at the assailant with a Border Patrol-issued M-4 rifle.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Turkey near Topawa, Arizona. The subject was walking through the brush with ten other illegal aliens from Mexico. Records checks revealed the subject had three previous visa refusals.

    El Paso Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested a national of Uzbekistan at the Alamogordo, New Mexico traffic checkpoint. The subject presented himself and a tractor-trailer for inspection. Records checks revealed the subject had a lengthy criminal history, and was recently released from prison after serving 367 days for an unspecified criminal conviction.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested two illegal aliens from Mexico and seized 776 pounds of marijuana valued at $621,120. Agents encountered the two illegal aliens and two other unidentified subjects while tracking a group of suspected illegal aliens near Sells, Arizona. While arresting all four subjects, one of the illegal aliens turned and struck the agent twice with a closed fist, at which time the two unidentified subjects absconded. A search for the two unidentified subjects was negative. Neither the agent nor the illegal alien who assaulted the agent required medical attention.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Mexico near Douglas, Arizona. Records checks revealed the subject was convicted of 4th degree rape in the State of Delaware, and had been previously removed from the United States.

    El Paso Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested 13 illegal aliens exiting from a storm drain in El Paso, Texas. Following an extensive search of the storm drain, no other subjects were found.

    El Paso Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Mexico in Sunland Park, New Mexico. Records checks revealed the subject had an active arrest warrant issued by the FBI for assault on a federal officer.

    Marfa Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Guatemala in Ft. Stockton, Texas. Records checks revealed the subject had an active INTERPOL warrant for a murder committed in Guatemala.

    ...an interesting comparison to the earlier posts about how Mexican officials in Mexico say they cannot handle the "burden" of Mexicans returning to Mexico.
