Some Farmers Moving Operations To Mexico
UPDATED: 10:30 pm PST February 12, 2008
Some American farmers are moving south of the border, including farmers who used to own farmland in southern California.
An increase in illegal immigration raids and the high cost of legal labor has caused many to move their operations to Mexico.
Labor in Mexico generally costs a tenth of what it costs in the United States.
Americans now farm nearly 50,000 acres of land in Mexico and employ 11,000 people.
Farmers who decide to move from the United States to Mexico face challenges and obstacles such as a higher crime rate, the suspicions of locals and doubts in the United States about the safety of Mexican products.
But U.S. farmers in Mexico said they are good for the Mexican economy and provide cheaper products to the United States.
