Italy’s Coast Guard Coordinates Rescue of 561 Migrants in Mediterranean

ROME – The Italian Coast Guard reported on Thursday that it had coordinated the rescue of 561 migrants and the recovery of a corpse in a day in which it had conducted seven rescue missions in the Mediterranean Sea.

The service said operations were coordinated from the Italian Coast Guard’s Operational Station in Rome.

The migrants were aboard two inflatable boats and five barges, and were rescued by ships belonging to the coast guard, the Italian Navy and two NGOs.

In addition, the medical NGO Doctors Without Borders (MSF) reported that its “Prudence” vessel was taking six bodies recovered in the last few days – five women and one man – to the port of Catania, on the island of Sicily.

The International Organization for Migration said on April 21 that so far this year 43,000 immigrants and refugees had reached Europe by the Mediterranean, while more than 1,000 migrants were believed to have died trying to make the journey.I
