U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents saved 18 immigrants Wednesday who were locked inside a cold tractor trailer at the Falfurrias checkpoint, according to a news release.
The agents conducted the rescue after the refrigerated tractor trailer went under a secondary inspection following a K-9 alert. The immigrants were found near a load of produce, with the temperature of the tractor trailer set to 51 degrees, the news release said.
The immigrants came from various countries including Mexico, Colombia, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Kosovo, according to the release.
The people had no way of getting out of the trailer, as it was locked from the outside. Agents used bolt cutters to open the trailer since the driver didn’t have a key.
The Mexican-national driver was arrested and will be prosecuted for his role in the incident.
