'Status Quo Is Just Not Acceptable': ICE Director Says Agency Is 'Running Out of Resources'
Jan. 2, 2019
Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Ronald Vitiello said Wednesday that his agency is being depleted of resources at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Speaking on "Special Report," Vitiello said that ICE is facing an "unprecedented crisis" regarding the traffic flow along the border.
He said that 65 percent of the more than 2,000 people arriving at the border each day are lone children or families with children.
"That changes the enforcement dynamic, it changes the traffic, it changes the resources that CBP (Customs and Border Protection) is applying to that problem," he said.
Vitiello said loopholes in immigration law are encouraging more people to come to the border.
"We're running out of resources, and the status quo is just not acceptable," he said.
He said that the partial government shutdown, which entered its 12th day Wednesday, is an issue for his agency, calling it a "disruption" to its employees.
ICE is already in "unprecedented territory," Vitiello said, adding that he was disappointed at lawmakers opposed to President Trump's long-proposed border wall.
"Those agents need an enduring capability to slow people down as they come across that border," he said. "You always have a safer border where you have that barrier."
