Steve King Gets Commitment From Leadership For Immigration Enforcement Legislation

    by Caroline May
    22 Jul 2015

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) says he has a commitment from House Leadership that it will bring immigration enforcement legislation to the House floor after the August recess.

In an email to Republican colleagues Tuesday, obtained by Breitbart News, King recalls a conversation he had with Majority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) Monday in which the GOP leader inquired about his level of support for the sanctuary city bill the House is slated to vote on this week.

“Leader McCarthy called me Monday and asked me a point blank question – If the Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) bill is brought to the Floor would you oppose it? I said No. This bill moves the ball in the right direction,” he wrote.

King noted in his email he told McCarthy that “a lot of conservatives would be disappointed because we should be doing more” and pointed to his sanctuary city bill that eliminates all federal assistance to sanctuary jurisdictions, makes detainers mandatory, requires DHS to hold criminal immigrants until deportation, and closes a loophole allowing sanctuaries to prevent officials from getting immigration information. He also highlighted his June amendment Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations Act.

“Kevin McCarthy expressed commitment to me to bring enforcement immigration legislation to the Floor after August,” King wrote.

“I’ll continue to advocate for what we can do that is constructive. And I will keep my commitment to vote yes if they bring the Hunter Bill to the Floor,” he added.

The House is slated to vote on Hunter’s bill later this week. It blocks federal law enforcement grants to cites and jurisdictions that do not cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

A McCarthy spokesman did not immediately respond to an email request for comment.

House Republicans plan more immigration legislation

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has promised lawmakers that he’ll bring more measures aimed at strengthening immigration enforcement to the House floor later this year, according to a top GOP immigration foe.

In an email sent to GOP lawmakers, Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) details a conversation he had with the No. 2 House Republican earlier this week. During the talk, McCarthy had asked King whether he would oppose a bill on the floor later this week targeting “sanctuary cities” — a measure that has come under some criticism from conservatives for not being tough enough.

King wrote in the email that he would support the bill, but that other House conservatives — who are itching to do more immigration enforcement legislation — would be disappointed.

“Kevin McCarthy expressed commitment to me to bring enforcement immigration legislation to the floor after August,” King wrote in the email. “I’ll continue to advocate for what we can do that is constructive.”

A spokesman for McCarthy did not immediately confirm his boss’s comments.

The House is set to vote on a bill later this week that would ban Justice Department grants to so-called sanctuary cities, where local law enforcement choose not to abide by federal immigration officials to turn over undocumented immigrants.

“It’s a component of the right thing,” King, a leading immigration hard-liner, said of the bill Wednesday. “If the leader wants to bring a component of the right thing to the floor rather than the whole enchilada, as I see it, I’m gonna support the component of the right thing.”

Steve, I would bet that promise has already been 'back burnered." America's leadership promises are not worth scrap paper!
