Widow sues over man's death at immigration center

    The Associated Press
    8:44 a.m. February 9, 2009

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The widow of a Chinese man who died at a privately operated detention center in Rhode Island is suing the owner and federal immigration authorities.

The lawsuit alleges that Hiu Lui "Jason" Ng (HYEW' Lew Eng) was denied medical care at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility. It says he was taunted and abused by staff who accused him of faking illness. Ng died of liver cancer last August.

Ng was held at the facility in Central Falls, R.I., for allegedly overstaying his visa.

The American Civil Liberties Union announced the lawsuit Monday on behalf of Ng's widow, Lin Li Qu.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has pulled its detainees out of Wyatt.

Officials of the center and the federal agency did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

You know, I don't think the detention killed him. He probably had undignosed liver cancer for a very long time.
