New Study Finds 57% of Immigrant Households with Children Use Welfare

A new study from the Center of Immigration Studies shows that 57% of households headed by an immigrant with children under the age of 18 receive some form of welfare. Only 39% of native born households with children receive welfare services. The study included households headed by both illegal and legal immigrants.

The research conducted by Steven Camorata, the Center's Director of Research, found that immigrant households tend to use food assistance and medicaid programs at a much higher rate than native born American households. He found that the use of cash and housing programs were about the same between the two groups.

Furthermore, the research found that a large share of the immigrant households using welfare is received on behalf of U.S.-born children. But 56% of the entirely immigrant households still use some from of welfare.

Among other findings:

* Households with children with the highest rates of welfare use are those headed by immigrants from the Dominican Republic (82 percent), and Mexico and Guatemala (75 percent). Those with the lowest use rates are from the United Kingdom (7 percent), India (19 percent), Canada (23 percent), and Korea (25 percent).
* The states where immigrant households with children have the highest welfare use rates are Arizona (62 percent); Texas, California, and New York (61 percent); Pennsylvania (59 percent); Minnesota, and Oregon (56 percent); and Colorado (55 percent).
* The Center estimates that 52 percent of households with children headed by legal immigrants used at least one welfare program in 2009, compared to 71 percent for illegal immigrant households with children. Illegal immigrants generally receive benefits on behalf of their U.S.-born children.
* Illegal immigrant households with children primarily use only food assistance and Medicaid, making almost no use of cash or housing assistance. In contrast, legal immigrant households tend to have relatively high use rates for every type of program.
* High welfare use by immigrant households with children is partly explained by the low education level of many immigrants. Of households headed by an immigrant who has not graduated high school, 80 percent access the welfare system, compared to 25 percent for those headed by an immigrant who has at least a bachelor’s degree.
* The vast majority (95 percent) of immigrant households with children had at least one worker in 2009. But their low education levels and resulting low incomes mean that more than half of these working immigrant households with children still accessed the welfare system during 2009.
* Excluding refugees, 57 percent of immigrant households with children access welfare.
* For all households (those with and without children), the use rates were 37 percent for households headed by immigrants and 22 percent for those headed by natives.
* Most new legal immigrants are barred from using some welfare for the first five years. But this provision has only a modest impact on household use rates because most immigrants have been in the country longer than five years; the ban applies only to some programs; some states provide welfare to new immigrants on their own; by naturalizing, immigrants become eligible for all programs; and most important, the U.S.-born children of immigrants (including those of illegal immigrants) are American citizens, and are eligible for all programs at birth.

Surprise, surprise; Census Bureau data reveals that most U.S. families headed by illegal immigrants use taxpayer-funded welfare programs on behalf of their American-born anchor babies.

Even before the recession, immigrant households with children used welfare programs at consistently higher rates than natives, according to the extensive census data collected and analyzed by a nonpartisan Washington D.C. group dedicated to researching legal and illegal immigration in the U.S. The results, published this month in a lengthy report, are hardly surprising.

Basically, the majority of households across the country benefitting from publicly-funded welfare programs are headed by immigrants, both legal and illegal. States where immigrant households with children have the highest welfare use rates are Arizona (62%), Texas, California and New York with 61% each and Pennsylvania (59%).

The study focused on eight major welfare programs that cost the government $517 billion the year they were examined. They include Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for the disabled, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), a nutritional program known as Women, Infants and Children (WIC), food stamps, free/reduced school lunch, public housing and health insurance for the poor (Medicaid).

Food assistance and Medicaid are the programs most commonly used by illegal immigrants, mainly on behalf of their American-born children who get automatic citizenship. On the other hand, legal immigrant households take advantage of every available welfare program, according to the study, which attributes it to low education level and resulting low income.

Emailed to my entire contact list. Printed out copies to hand out too. Also sent to ALL my representatives local, state and national.

We don't have a budget problem , we have an illegal alien problem

They use their children for every thing.Get ss cards for them and buy houses and cars off that.Pass their children from church to church to get pity from them to get free stuff.Show them to all free goverment agentcies to get free stuff.Then you got kind hearted americans that care about children that dont want to see kids doing without.Illegals are smart not dumb they know america is a country that tries to help and they have learned how to do it by explorting their children.And with birth right they think its an entiteledment to them.

Most of us have known for years the illegals use their anchors for all the bennies

All politicians should be held accountable for the cost of their attempts to undermine, and corrupt this Great Country or Ours! President Obama has increased the attempt to cross our border with his pandering to illegals to the point that our Border patrol agents lives are in jeopordy like never before! His opinions and comments carry alot of consequence to the lives of many! The cost to social services has increased to the point that states can no longer predict growth in required budgets. This continued posturing for votes should be addressed in our houses of Congress! I know that most of us that peruse this site are aware of all of this, and that we do all that we can. Try as I might, I can`t fathom any better way to bring this cost to us better than carrying our property tax and state tax statement with me to hand to those who represent us! Ask that they answer for the cost of the choices that they make!

How are illegal immigrants eligible to receive welfare benefits and foods from the WIC program when our Vets are sleeping out in the cold weather and homeless and thousands of jobless citizens are suffering from not being able to afford medications and purchase enough food to stay healthy? I have heard many unemployed citizens say they have applied for welfare benefits and cannot receive food stamps or Medicate because they do not have a part time job, working 30 hours weekly or young children in their homes.

And who put a law into effect that prevents Social workers from requesting information about persons applying for benefits residential status? Social Service employees are blocked from gathering information pertains to immigrant’s legal status, why? There are not any laws legislated that have made illegal aliens legal immigrants in this Country, unless I have missed something?

Americans are eligible because Americans pay the taxes.
Illegals in most case do not pay the same amount of taxes that they get from the programs like WIC, Welfare and Food stamps.

If they did, how come CALIFORNIA is so broke.

Substitute "anchor babies" for "U.S.-born children," and you see why the 'Bamacrats refusal to deport families will result in our being colonized by people whom we do not even need.

Americans flocked to job openings at Ranchers Markets and the Pei Wei and Chipotle restaurant chains, when those companies had to get rid of illegals. But not deporting their illegal anchor babies guarantees that those same illegals can receive welfare in thier anchor babies names.

The authors of the 14th Amendment were clear about its not pertaining to people who had any other allegiance. I don't know how we got away from that, but the U.S. and Canada are the only two countries which still permit the birthright citizenship lunacy.

A new Center for Immigration Studies report finds that 57 percent of households headed by an immigrant -- legal or illegal -- that include children younger than 18 use at least one welfare program. But just 39 percent of such native households do so.

The report, based on U.S. Census Bureau data, notes that many welfare dollars aid immigrants' children who are citizens by virtue of U.S. birth. But 56 percent of immigrant households whose children were born abroad use welfare.

Pennsylvania's immigrant-household welfare use rate -- 59 percent -- is the third-highest among the states.

CIS says most immigrants come here to work but use welfare.

"This means giving businesses access to large numbers of less-educated workers can come at a significant cost to taxpayers," the report says.

It suggests basing legal immigration on education levels to lessen taxpayers' burden. That should be a no-brainer.

Amnesty for illegal aliens would be contrary to the rule of law, of course, and would only exacerbate the problem. But America also should admit fewer legal immigrants and be more selective about who gets in so taxpayers don't end up supporting their children.

You notice no one is talking about how this is effecting the federal deficit and as well the national debt.
