Del Rio Border Patrol apprehends more than 300 migrants, many Haitians, near Rio Grande

Agents with U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Del Rio arrested two large groups of migrants who crossed into the United States this week, according to a news release.

On June 22, 2019, Border Patrol agents in Del Rio arrested a group of 105 people after they crossed the Rio Grande. The group consisted of about 82 Haitians as well as a number of South American and African nationals, according to the release.

Two days later, agents in Del Rio arrested a group of 205 people after they crossed the Texas-Mexico border. The group on June 24 consisted of about 122 Haitian nationals, but also included nationals from South American and African countries, the release states.

“Del Rio Sector Border Patrol agents have apprehended people from over 45 countries around the world,” said Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Raul L. Ortiz, who said the situation was part of an ongoing humanitarian crisis.

Border Patrol officials noted it was the third time since Oct. 1, 2018 agents have arrested large groups of migrants consisting of more than 100 people in the Del Rio area, according to the release.

All migrants apprehended in the Del Rio Sector are medically evaluated and referred to more advanced care if needed, according to the release.
