Man charged with DWI after Wake wreck

    From staff reports

RALEIGH -- A man with two prior drunken driving convictions was arrested Saturday night and charged with driving while impaired after being involved in a wreck in northern Wake County.

Benito Chavez Campos, 32, was driving a 1987 Jeep Wrangler on N.C. 96 when he veered across the center line and collided with another vehicle, according to arrest warrants.

Campos smelled of alcohol and had red, glassy eyes, according to arrest warrants.

He was later determined to have a blood-alcohol content as 0.16, twice the illegal limit, according to arrest warrants.

Campos lives in Wilson. His previous DWI convictions occurred in 1998 and 2005.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement office is now investigation whether Campos, a Mexican national, should be deported.

He was being held in Wake County jail Sunday night in lieu of $3,000 bond.

Why is this guys still here? He should have been deported after the first offense. Furthermore, is the man on an immigration hold? The article certainly doesn't state that, but it does say he's being held in lieu of a $3,000 bond. What kind of crap is that, $3,000 for almost killing someone.

Oh yeah, I have seen that a few times. It makes it sound like the guy was some kind of visiting dignitary. Mexican national indeed.
