Surf City: 99 arrests in 2010 lead to ICE hold

HUNTINGTON BEACH – In 2010, 99 people suspected of being illegal immigrants were arrested by police and put on hold by Immigration and Customs Enforcement while in the department's custody, officials reported.
Police work with ICE to inquire about the immigration status of people booked at the Huntington Beach City Jail. Officers book about 5,500 into the city's jail. ICE bookings make up about 2 percent, police reported.

Huntington Beach police arrested 99 people that were put on ICE hold in 2010. Most of the arestees were from Mexico but others were from countries including Latvia, Poland and Russia.

Of the arrestees, 89 were men and 10 were women. Eighty-nine people were from Mexico and the remaining arrests were from Poland, Russia, Laos, Vietnam and Latvia, among other countries.

Drunken driving made up 25 of the arrests with warrant arrests falling just behind at 20.

Drug offenses, domestic violence, burglary, assault, child neglect and robbery were also among arrestees put on hold by ICE.
