Susan Sarandon: U.S. should help Mexico build schools, not wall

    Associated Press

TIJUANA, Mexico - Actress Susan Sarandon, a longtime liberal political activist and outspoken opponent of the Iraq war, thinks the United States should help build schools in Mexico - not walls along the border.

Visiting a preschool in a slum bordering a vast, municipal garbage dump in Tijuana, Sarandon said education was the key to improving lives in Mexico. She criticized a U.S. congressional proposal to extend walls along the 2,000-mile U.S.-Mexico border.

The school was founded by New York educator David Lynch who came to Tijuana in 1980 as a volunteer teacher. He later built the school for the children of Mexicans who eke out a living gathering recyclable material from the dump.

Sarandon, who has starred in movies such as "Thelma & Louise" and "The Client," has been supporting the project for years.

"I'm very proud especially with the world careening out of control," she said. "People feel they have no control over their lives. I think this school is helping people to get control over their lives."

This woman is out there for every ludicrous cause that comes along. I do not listen to a word that comes out of her mouth as she has no clue how the real people live in this world. She has her own obscure vision of a beautiful world where everybody lives for free and can do whatever they want and the american taxpayers will pay for it. Her opinion is the minority never the majority so pay her no mind.

How about Susan, spending a little of those Millions she has in the Banks. To build Schools for them. If she is so concerned. Maybe she could do without those big fancy Meals, and big Fancy houses.

Well, I say let Susan step up and put her money where her mouth is. I'm sure President Fox would be more than eager to take her "large" donation for the building of schools. With the current teacher strike going on in Mexico, he'd probably even allow her to live in a poverty stricken community and teach English. You go girl - Mexico is waiting for you. I'm sick and tired of these celebrities that talk a big game, but when it comes time to part with their own money - the deep pockets are closed tighter than a gnats a$$. Reminds me of Daryl Hannah's last rights protest. You know, the one where she climbed up a California tree supporting a bunch of bums that refused to leave a man property. When the bums ask her for a donation to buy the property she said, "my financial situation doesn't currently allow me to do that" or something very similar. Celebrities should stick to their profession in the entertainment industry and stay out politics. Are you listening Dixie Chicks?

Use your money Susan, not the taxpayers!

    WELL SAID MW!

I agree. Susan, put out your own damn money. I'm sure if you made a generous donation to president fox, about 2% MIGHT actually go to a mexican school, but I would doubt it.

That is my point they are out there shooting off their mouths but do not put up the bucks to back it up. No they expect us taxpayers to pay for it. Get outta here you idiots and go back to acting and leave the real world to us real people.

Mexico's problem go far deeper than their educational system, and building a few more schools there is like giving a person living next door to a manure factory a fly swatter...sure, you may kill a few more flies, but will it seriously address the problem? NO

I was reading the other day a report on Mexico's unemployed/under employment rates...37 percent of the population, and the fact that said rate would climb to almost 50 percent if illegals now in America were repatriated to Mexico. Does not take a rocket scientist to know something is seriously wrong with a country that has those kinds of numbers.

Ditto, ditto and (especially) ditto the Dixie Chicks!

Susan wants schools built and then will recommend we send teachers, to put their lives in danger. Not to mention, I think it's the duty of Mexico's rich government to build schools and educate their own. Oh, wait. Educate the masses. That wouldn't be good for the government now would it?

Anytime I hear that Susan will be on some talk or news show, I absolutely won't be watching or listening. Likewise her hubby, Tim Robbins.

Hey Sippy - welcome newbie (I'm a 'near' newbie, whatever that's worth...)

To me, at least, it would be nice if Ms. Sarandon worried about some of our very own failing schools here in the US first - there are plenty - if she cares to learn of them.

Also, is it just me, or do you find it curious that many high-profile open borders advocates (policitians, corporate CEO types, movie stars, etc) tend to reside in 'beachfront gated communities' and the like?
Hmmmm... I'm still thinking about this...
Sounds like hypocrisy to me though...

Another global elitist who thinks her fame should have us all clamoring for her every word. Why doesn't she question Mexico and ask for an accounting of the millions and millions of dollars we already send over there? I can just imagine what she thinks should be taught in those schools.

Maybe folks like her and Ted Kennedy and Arlen Specter can pool their millions of dollars and start building today!
