Syrian refugee family resettled in Indianapolis despite Pence's wishes

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. —The Archdiocese of Indianapolis has resettled a family of Syrian refugees despite opposition from Gov. Mike Pence.

The governor has called for the suspension of that resettlement program, but the archbishop said, in a statement, that the family has arrived in Indianapolis and is now being hosted by Catholic charities.

Pence disagrees with the archbishop's decision.

“This is not about a family, this is not about Catholic charities, this is about an administration and Congress, that should take decisive action to pause this program and review it and ensure we can go forward with the placement of Syrian refugees without compromising safety and security,” Pence said.

Pence said Indiana continues to welcome refugees from other countries.

Twenty-eight people have relocated to Indiana from the Congo and Burma in the past two weeks.
