Is McCain Serious about Immigration Reform?
    June 9, 2007

Sen. John McCain said Friday during a trip to Iowa said: "People of Arizona sent me to Washington to do the hard things. They didn't expect me to go there and say no and do nothing about our broken border in Arizona."

Why is Sen. McCain not specifically doing anything about the broken Arizona border? Why does McCain stubbornly expend political energy on such things, as family unification and loopholes for illegal aliens to remain in the country - neither has anything to do with broken borders - but everything to do with political pandering?

If Sen. McCain and other advocates of this vast inflated do-all immigration bill were really serious about reform, why haven't one single senator come foreword to propose stand alone bills to get the job done? Why mix much needed enforcement provisions with non-related controversial provisions that only lead to a bill being bogged down with controversy?

The talk of bringing illegal’s out from the shadows is a demonstratable ruse because current enforcement has proven they cannot work or be arrested while remaining in the shadows. With substantial fines and the requirement to return to ones home country would only insure illegal’s remain in the shadows. Only enforcement will bring them out of the shadows eventually.

Paraphrasing President Bush, "you can sneak in but you cannot hide."

So, why do Sen. McCain and his fellow reformers insist on working behind closed doors to produce an overwhelming 600 plus page reform bill? The obvious answer is that any hope to provide mass amnesty is to overshadow the act of amnesty with more acceptable enforcement provisions.

When the day comes when lawmakers can propose important stand alone bills to address broken borders and illegal hiring then we will begin to consider if they are really serious.

And here is the sixty-four dollar question. Could it be the senators are all bought and paid for by the corporations and consequently, don't really have any intention of fixing the border. The rest is just smoke and mirrors?
