Tax refund dilemma for illegal immigrants

Tax refund dilemma for illegal immigrants

By Winthrop Quigley / Journal Staff Writer on Sun, May 19, 2013

Alex Urquides prepares tax returns in Roswell. One of his clients is an $80,000-a-year oil-field worker who lives in Carlsbad. The state owes the client a $2,000 tax refund but won’t cut a check until the client provides a letter from his employer verifying that the $2,000 really came from taxes it withheld from the client’s paycheck.

The oil-field worker told Urquides to let the state keep the money.

Such are the complications of being a tax-paying illegal immigrant in New Mexico. The worker told Urquides he’d rather lose $2,000 than risk losing his job by disclosing to his employer that he is in the country illegally....
