Taylor's failure to vote on CAFTA draws criticisms

    The Associated Press

U.S. Rep. Charles Taylor's failure to register a vote during final approval of the Central American Free Trade Agreement brought criticism Thursday from a would-be opponent in next year's congressional elections.

Democrat Heath Shuler said Taylor "gave us his word that he would vote against CAFTA, and I don't understand why he did not." The trade deal passed by a margin of 217-215.

Leading up to the vote, the seven-term Republican from Brevard said he would vote no on the trade agreement.

"Charles Taylor had a tremendous opportunity last night to do some real good for the people of Western North Carolina by voting against CAFTA," Shuler said in a statement. "Instead, he made the decision to sit by and watch while Congress passed this legislation that will send thousands of Western North Carolina jobs out of the country."

Shuler, a native of western North Carolina and a former star quarterback at the University of Tennessee is seeking the Democratic nomination to oppose Taylor in 2006.

In a statement, Taylor said he tried to vote against the agreement but his vote wasn't recorded by the House computer.

"I am reinserting my 'No' vote in the record," Taylor said. "But even with my no vote reinserted, the bill still passed."

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee issued a statement blasting Taylor and noting that the congressman was present for 11 other House votes Wednesday but missed the extra-long vote on CAFTA.

"With the opportunity to vote for an entire hour, as opposed to the usual 15 minutes, it would be nearly impossible for a member of the United States House of Representatives to be unable to record his vote, as Taylor claims," the statement said.

I don't think so. He is registering his NO VOTE In the Record and It will be counted, right? Now...what about Jo Ann Davis...did she know that the 15 minute rule was extended to an hour? Maybe she didn't know she could still vote. She said she was only 30 minutes late. They extended the voting to an HOUR. So she was there and could have voted. Did someone lie to her and tell her she couldn't? Maybe they blocked it? Was she a yes or a no?

If Taylor's vote counts and Davis was mis-led...I mean I couldn't even figure out what was going on after the clock went off watching it on C-Span. Why wouldn't they just reset the clock to 1 hour. I don't understand that. That creates too much confusion. They never announced it that I could hear that they were extending it for an hour.

Good Point Charles...I saw that on the news this evening and wished I had my bucket of tomatoes!!

But what I heard on WRAL was that they threatened him with not giving him $70 mm in highway funds that he was scheduled for.

That's why he changed his vote.

That's Black Mail. Plain and Simple.

These are our highway monies. Whoever needs them and is entitled through the normal process of determination shall have them, irrespective of what El Presidente and his band of goons would like to see on a Vote on a Treason Treaty!!

That is absolutely outrageous, illegal, an abuse of power that affects highway safety which affects the lives of all Americans who travel all the highways of all the Congressional Districts of the United States.

    HOW DARE THEM!!

Bush is a Maniacal Deviant Rotten Stinkin' Bucket of Pig Slop!!

He'd knock his own mother down the stairs to get another YES VOTE ON CAFTA and line the pockets of his Globbie Crones!!
