Tea party groups and activists are voicing some national support for Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio in his fights with the Obama administration and Arizona critics over racial profiling of Hispanics, illegal immigration and his office's handling of alleged sex abuse cases.

KFYI-AM 550 in Phoenix reports tea party advocates have collected 100,000 petition signatures nationally in support of Arpaio. The Obama administration claims in a civil rights probe that the MCSO unfairly pulls over Latino drivers and sometimes mistreats Hispanic inmates at county jails.

The MCSO is also under scrutiny for how it handled some molestation cases in El Mirage and other parts of the Phoenix area. Arpaio has apologized for some of the missteps on that front but says the Obama adminstration's civil rights allegations are politically motivated.
