Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents continued to search for a person who may be lost in the desert Tuesday after rescuing a group of nine illegal immigrants the previous morning.

The search began after a woman reported seeing the distressed group in the desert.

“For those crossing in the summer months, it is not uncommon to suffer from heat-related issues while in open desert,” said K. Linwood Estes, border community liaison with the Yuma Sector Communications Division.

“It is hard to carry enough water to last an extended trip of more than a day or two during the hot summer months.”

The Mexican citizens rescued Monday were found north of the Chocolate Mountains and west of Blythe, Calif., by members of the Search, Trauma and Rescue team (BORSTAR), with air support provided by the Customs and Border Protection's Office of Air and Marine. It was unknown at what time and at what location the group had crossed the border.

Rescuers initially found a group of six people who then reported other members of their party had been left behind.

Tracking footprints in the dirt, agents found two more members of the group buried in sand at about 11:30 a.m. The two had buried themselves in a desperate attempt to seek shelter from the oppressive rays of the midday sun.

Then at noon, a ninth member of the party that had been separated from the main group used his cell phone to call 911 after seeing a CBP helicopter flying in the area.

The rescue team gave him emergency first aid before transporting him to the hospital, where he was treated for dehydration and asthma symptoms.

He was released from the hospital at about 10 p.m. and taken into custody by the Border Patrol. The group will now appear before an immigration judge who will decide on their status.
