Texas has asked that the U.S. Supreme Court not review a lower court's decision blocking President Barack Obama's plan to spare millions of immigrants from deportation.
Legal papers filed Tuesday say the president's plan to protect as many as 5 million immigrants goes beyond established laws and constitutional authority. The immigrants affected by the plan are mainly parents of U.S. citizens.
A coalition of 26 states, led by Texas, argues that the Obama administration exceeded its authority in devising a program to allow millions of immigrants the right to reside and work in the United States, and receive benefits. The states argue that the administration claimed the power to bypass established statutes without the notice and comment required for such a sweeping change in immigration policy.
