Mexican Slowdown May Drive More North

Mexican slowdown may drive more north

    Feb. 17, 2007 at 12:43AM

The Mexican economy slowed in the fourth quarter of 2006, and one result may be an increase in the number of Mexican immigrants heading for the United States.
Mexico's gross domestic product grew by 4.3 percent during the last three months of 2006, officials reported Friday. It was the third consecutive quarter of slower growth -- and a sharp decline from the 5.5 percent growth recorded in the first quarter of the year, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The slowdown was attributed to factors including sluggish manufacturing and a slowdown in exports to the United States -- Mexico's top export destination.
Eugenio Aleman, a Latin America economist with Wells Fargo in Minnesota, told the Times the situation poses a tough challenge for Mexican President Felipe Calderon, who campaigned on a platform of job creation and economic growth.
"When I took a look at some of the numbers I said, 'Uh-oh,'" Aleman said. "Things are not looking good."
For 2006 overall, Mexico's GDP grew 4.8 percent, posting its largest annual expansion since 2000. The government collected record tax revenues because of high oil prices, and job creation was strong.
However, inflation has been rising and oil production is slipping, the newspaper said.

How can that be, when all our companies are moving down there and I heard a while back that there are Mexican companies who need help they can't find.

The Mexican companies hire people from Central American and pay them less than Mexicans. They claim Mexicans are lazy and don't want to work hard. Gee doesn't this sound familiar?
We need to definitely make it harder for them to both cross the border and get tough on employers. They won;t come if there is no work for them.

Maybe we should enforce our laws the way Mexico does. Perhaps we can learn something from them.

I’m not sure I really care about what problems Mexico has incurred from immigrant criminals coming here, if it is causing them to loose money
    TAKE THEM BACK

I can't recall what tv program I saw but it showed US companies in Mexico but the surrounding areas, where the workers lived, were horrible. People living in cardboard box type dwellings. So American workers loose their jobs because companies move down south and when they do they hire people and obviously pay them so little they can hardly live. Only big biz is profiting from this disaster, not the people on either side of the border.

Ther have been a few business that I had accounts with that were so cheap they relocated to Mexico and went bankrupt from cutting costs.

Maybe if Mexican labor start becoming rare south of the border, the will start encouaging illegals to stay home. And maybe even use incentives.
But I wont hold may breath.

Why would the Mexican government have them stop coming here if their money sent back home is the country's second highest income behind oil. Unfortunately we have to stop them and as I have said before we need to secure our borders and make it harder for them to get jobs.
