3 arrested, drugs seized after boat comes ashore at Del Mar beach

Thirty bundles of narcotics were seized and three people were arrested early Monday after a suspected smuggling boat came ashore in Del Mar, a Border Patrol spokeswoman said.

The panga was spotted by agents around 2:30 a.m. at the beach near Fourth Street, north of Torrey Pines State Beach. Four people were seen aboard the small boat by agents patrolling in the area, said Border Patrol Agent Tekae Michael.

Three people were arrested but one person ran away, she said.

Agents seized 30 bundles of narcotics, Michael said. She said tests were being conducted to determine what kind of drugs were in the packages.

Video shot by 10 News showed agents hoisting the large black packages into the beds of two pickup trucks.

The small boat, which was still at the shoreline hours later, will be seized by agents, Michael said.

When there are border jumpers, there is almost always the drugs. The politicians whine about the opioid epidemic in this country and want more money for it but they will not plug the hole that it is coming from. Illegal drug runners might vote for them ....JMO

These small boats that land on the beach are usually marijuana, as was this one.

3 Arrested After Smuggling Boat Lands At Del Mar

About 30 large bundles of suspected drugs were seized when a small smuggling boat landed on the beach Monday morning, officials said.

DEL MAR, CA – Three people were arrested and about 30 large bundles of suspected drugs were seized when a small smuggling boat landed on the beach Monday morning in Del Mar, the U.S. Border Patrol reported.

The Panga boat was first spotted about 2:30 a.m. off the waters of Torrey Pines State Beach and landed on the sand below Fourth Street in Del Mar, USBP public-affairs Agent Tekae Michael said. Three people aboard the boat were detained and the 30 bundles were being tested Monday morning to confirm they were illegal narcotics.

Border Patrol agents on scene told ABC10 the bundles contained marijuana and weighed between 30 and 50 pounds each, meaning the total weight of the drugs was between 900 and 1,500 pounds.

The station showed video of the large bundles in black trash bags filling the beds of two Border Patrol pickups.

Pangas like the one discovered Monday morning are a favorite smuggling vessel used by drug traffickers.

Boats.com described the boat, which features an outboard motor, as a low-cost vessel that is versatile and "and can perform in both shallow and deep water."

Pangas have been used often in recent years to smuggle both drugs and people onto San Diego County beaches from Mexico.
