Texas governor doesn't 'want to see' border wall in Big Bend

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says he does expect the U.S. to build new physical barriers along the border with Mexico once Donald Trump takes office.

But Abbott also said Tuesday that "we don't want to see a wall" through the Big Bend region. Texas shares more than 1,200 miles with Mexico and spends more than $800 million on border security.

Abbott says Texas could cut back on those costs under a Trump administration.

He says he also wants to see if Trump rolls back an Obama administrative order that required public schools to let transgender students use bathrooms consistent with their chosen gender identity.

Business groups are opposed to Texas passing its own bathroom regulations. Abbott told reporters in Austin he's still evaluating whether the state needs its own law.

Casa Grande is a prominent peak in the Chisos Mountains of the Big Bend area of west Texas. The view is from the Pinnacles Trail in Big Bend National Park.

The Big Bend is a colloquial name of a geographic region in the western part of the state of Texas in the United States along the border with Mexico, roughly defined as the counties north of the prominent northward bend in the Rio Grande as it passes through the gap between the Chisos Mountains in Texas and the Sierra Madre Oriental in Mexico. It is sometimes loosely defined as the part of Texas south of U.S. Highway 90 and west of the Pecos River. The region includes three counties in Texas: Brewster, Jeff Davis and Presidio.

The region is sparsely populated, arid, and rugged, containing the Chisos and the Davis Mountain ranges. The region has more than one million acres (4,000 km²) of public lands, including Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park along the north side of the Rio Grande. It is also the home of the McDonald Observatory.

The largest towns in the region are Alpine, Presidio, Marfa, Sanderson, Terlingua, and Marathon.

Our governor could have been doing more about the illegals in Texas and maybe we wouldn't need a border wall.

That especially goes for our former Gov. Perry. I was saddened to see him in the cabinet.

I don't want a wall along the Rio Grande or Big Bend either, but I want the illegals out of Texas.

No state should need to do anything about illegal aliens or border control because those are both the responsibilities of the federal government. If the feds had done their job there would be nothing for any state to do.

Yes, you are right.

A couple of things - a state shouldn't have to enforce immigration laws - but a state also SHOULD NOT encourage, reward, and protect illegals - which our state has been doing for 40 years.

Also, part of our state government's job is to protect it's citizens, and work for their good. This our governor's have not done, from Gov Bush, Perry, and the present one.

If the federal government isn't going to protect the people, then the state certainly should.

Didn't the good folks of Texas (my birth state) vote Gov. Gregg Abbott in to deal with the illegal immigrant problem and open Texas border? I realize these are federal government responsibilities, but there comes a time when you just have to say WTF and take care of business own your own. Texas, being a border state, is at that point (IMO).

It's way past that point.

Texas is my birthplace and I do love it - warts and all.

I will have to admit I don't really know what this Gov's platform was. I just know the results. I have been pleased with some of the things he has said, on other subjects, but it's the results that count and I don't see any - immigration wise.

As I said, just enforcing traffic laws could go a long way to making them uncomfortable. For many, if they can't drive, they can't work. If they can't work, they may go home. Besides, they love their cars.

Keeping them off the road would help in other ways. Let's traffic-less accidents - less wear and tear on highways, etc.

Could a governor 'lean' on cities to enforce city ordinances? I would think he could.

In Ft. Worth, some years ago, they discovered a lot of people had bypassed the water meters and were using city water without paying the bills. When a reporter went to the door of a couple of them, they 'no habla-ed' her.

Now it may be different in Ft. Worth, but most places you pay for water, sewer, and garbage on the same bill. So these people had not only been stealing water, but probably other services as well, sewer for sure.

The city got tough with them - they had to pay a whopping $50 and come down and sign up for water!!!

Now I'm not sure how they 'discovered' this, since a meter reader would have to know people lived in the house, but were using no water.

I saw a house in a Texas city, with an 'unfit for habitation' type sign on it, but several Mexican adults and a lot of children were living there.
There was a huge electrical cord, the kind used to hook up trailer houses, running out of a hole knocked in the side of the house, ran across the yard, about 4 foot high and up a electric pole and was attached to something.

They were evidently stealing electricity and doing it in a very dangerous manner.

Again, you know meter readers, street maintenance, postmen, policemen had seen that and no one was doing anything about it.

These are the things that were/and are happening all over the state and it cost all of us more than we can imagine.

Survey of Texans in Congress finds little support for full border wall

Our state government has had little support for anything that would curb illegal immigration.

We shouldn't listen to what the politicians are saying, we should be looking at the results of what they have done.

The evidence is plain in Texas.

Just look at the law I just read concerning using e-Verify. Only the original contractor has to use it - doesn't say anything about subcontractors, like the manpower companies.

A few years ago, they passed a law that all plumbers and electricians must be licensed.

We live in a small town, the mail plumbers and electricians are second and third generations.

The electrician got a job wiring a new house. Our local 'inspector' went to the site and told him he must cease and desist. The next day a large plumbing company from about 70 miles away came out, unloaded a pickup of illegals and they did the wiring.

The plumbing 'company' had a licenses - evidently those doing the work do not need them.

Do you think those lawmakers didn't realize that would be happening? Of course, they did.

Look at the result - don't listen to the rhetoric.
