US Mulls High-Speed Rail Link to Mexico

Posted by: Narayan Ammachchi in Americas Economics, January 20, 2014

    By Narayan Ammachchi

Officials from Mexico and the United States are reportedly discussing a plan to build a high-speed railway line between the two North American countries. If agreed, the railroad will be completed by 2018, according to Fox News Latino.

Once built, trains would take passengers from San Antonio, Texas, to Monterrey, Mexico in less than two hours.

“U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar, a Texas Democrat, and Texas Department of Transportation Commissioner Jeff Austin, as well as Mexican officials, presented the plan to U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx on Thursday in Washington D.C.,” reported Fox News Latino.

Mexico says it agrees with the plan and has also set aside money to fund the project, which is likely to begin in the first half of 2015. The Mexican Congress is set to pass a bill liberalizing its railroad industry in the first half of this year.

According to Fox News, the idea for the international railway sprung from a Texas Department of Transportation 850-mile study started in September of 2012. The study initially looked into building a high-speed rail between Oklahoma City and southern Texas but has been expanded to include a separate extension of the railway from San Antonio to Monterrey Mexico.

“The study costs $5.6 million dollars, and an additional $400,000 would allow us to extend the study to Monterrey.

Once we have route selection then we will begin talking to the private sector,” Texas transportation commissioner Jeff Austin was reported as saying.

The railroad will certainly boost trade between the two nations. Mexico is already the second-largest goods export market to the U.S.

Monterrey is the capital city of Mexico’s northeastern state of Nuevo León, and is a major hubb for traders in both countries. Moreover, Monterrey is widely regarded as the most “Americanized” city in Mexico.

High speed railway for goods? Nope. The picture is showing a passenger train, and the article says it's to move passengers from San Antonio to Monterry and of course from Monterrey to San Antonio. This train isn't for trade or to move "goods". This train section is to haul illegal aliens in and drug money out.

Sneaky thugs. They won't be moving goods as we know them, they'll be hauling illegal aliens in and drug money out on a passenger train.

Wake Up! Investigate who in the Texas DOT came up with this nonsense, and who paid them to recommend it. You'll trace it right back to the cartels and their paypals.

Yes, they certainly are, all on the false premise that this will increase manufacturing on "both sides of the border and reduce the number of Mexican job-seekers in the US". What a bunch of baloney. They aren't coming here as "job-seekers", they're coming here as welfare-seekers, and to run the drug trades and other illegal businesses for the cartels. And for those who don't know, we already have a consistently large legal trade-deficit with Mexico to the tune of between $50 and $70 billion a year depending on oil prices. So anyone who thinks that America wins on these free trade deals with Mexico, are full of crap and just lying to the American people to justify their treasonous acts against US citizens. Now add in the n illegal drug trade which is another $240 billion a year over the Southern Border, most of which flows out to the cartels, and guess what? Mexican and other drug cartels are sucking the life and breath out of the US economy. Then add another $20 or so billion a year in "remittances", $30 billion or more when times are good, just to Mexico plus all the taxes and debt spent on their huge portion of the illegal alien population that we support here, and a 3rd grader would know that these free trade and massive immigration policies are clearly unequivocally a total complete disaster for the United States.

The world just watches and laughs at our stupidity, and rightly so.

Blanco has been dumping his poor people on us for decades. This train should make it less stressful for illegals. All they have to do is get themselves a phony I.D. and they'll be home free in no time. Yikes.

Exactly. "Yikes" it is, because it's certainly not a high-speed train being built for Americans to go to Monterrey.

Kinda ridiculous proposal. There are many more suitable routes for high speed rail within the USA.

Yes it is ridiculous. The very notion of connecting the US with Mexico with high-speed rail before we connect New York with Philadelphia, Chicago and Washington DC, for example, places Americans need to travel to is totally bizarre! Again, it drives to the matter of payola and key people in key positions being on the take with the Cartels. There's no other explanation for this madness.
