Bodies of 5 Men Found in Mexico

Sunday, December 27, 2009

ACAPULCO, Mexico — Police in the northern Mexico state of Durango have found the bodies of five men in a rural area.

The Durango state prosecutors' office says two of the five men have been identified as workers at a local mine.

The other bodies have not yet been identified and were partially devoured by wild animals.

The office said Sunday that the men were reported missing since Dec. 20, and their bodies were found on Christmas Day.

The grisly discovery was close to an area dominated by drug cartels, whose violent turf battles have cost more than 15,000 lives in the last three years.

Also Sunday in the Pacific coast state of Guerrero, police found the bound and bullet-ridden bodies of three people, including a boy who appeared to be about 13 years old.

Guerrero state police said the bodies were found Sunday in the town of Tlapehuala, in an area where drug cartels frequently operate.

The victims had their hands bound behind their backs and had been shot repeatedly.

A message was found on a piece of cardboard near the bodies, but police in Mexico generally do not release the contents of such messages.
