Evangelicals join the push for protection for young immigrants.

Many evangelicals won’t let partisan divides keep them from rallying for immigration reform, particularly the urgent push for congressional action to allow Dreamers—who entered the US as kids—to remain in America.


Several pastors and members of Trump’s evangelical advisory board met Thursday with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who they cheered for her defense of young immigrants fighting for legal status.


A prominent Democrat in Congress, Pelosi also happens to rank among evangelicals most-disliked politicians; more than half (55%) of self-identified evangelicals had an unfavorable view of her in a recent Politico/Morning Consult poll.


Yet Trump adviser and National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC) president Samuel Rodriguez (also a CT board member) told Pelosi today that “America is a better place because of your prophetic leadership” on immigration.
Two more evangelical advisers—Maryland pastor Harry Jackson and Southern Baptist minister Jay Strack—as well as two other NHCLC leaders also participated in the meeting in Washington with Pelosi, fellow religious leaders, and Dreamers themselves.
“We’re joined together in the spirit of bipartisanship, compelled by our faith, to protect our Dreamers,” the minority leader said in a press conference streamed on Facebook Live.


Currently, nearly 70 percent of evangelicals believe Dreamers should be allowed to stay in the country, with 49 percent supporting a path to citizenship and 20 percent believing they should become legal residents but not citizens, Politico/Morning Consult found. (Overall, 75 percent of registered voters want the Dreamers to stay.)


For weeks, there have been talks of immigration reform from Congress and the White House. But as plans for bipartisan immigration overhaul have stalled, advocates have become desperate for a fix for Dreamers, once protected by deportation from the program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Since the Trump administration rescinded DACA, an estimated 800,000 young adults could lose their status and risk deportation as early as March 5.


Johnnie Moore, a fellow adviser to Trump and an evangelical consultant, helped organize the gathering and holds out hope that Congress will bring legislative protection for Dreamers. He tweeted:

It is the job of Congress to make laws & not according to their opinions but the opinions of their constituents. Our system demands compromise. We encourage & pray for a #DACADeal.

Last fall, dozens of evangelical leaders came to the Dreamers’ defense.

“We believe this is a special category of immigrants who are not legally culpable, who in most cases have no home other than the United States, and who are a blessing to their communities and to their churches,” read a letter signed by 51 leaders, including several Southern Baptist pastors and denominational leaders as well as evangelicals like Leith Anderson, president of the National Association of Evangelicals, Scott Arbeiter, president of World Relief, and D. A. Carson, president of The Gospel Coalition.
Many evangelicals who support immigration reform, including leaders involved with the Evangelical Immigration Table, are particularly concerned about family and life issues, praying for a policy that keeps parents and children together, prioritizes safety, and upholds human dignity.

NHCLC vice president Tony Suarez, who also met with Pelosi, described the organization’s advocacy for immigration reform as part of its efforts “protecting lives from womb to tomb.”


Back in October, 29 percent of evangelical voters considered a Dreamers bill a top priority for Congress and 28 percent considered it “an important but lower” priority, according to a Morning Consult/Politico poll.


By early January, those figures shot up to 41 percent considering immigration reform a top priority and 31 percent considering it “an important but lower” priority. Only 6 percent of evangelicals believe an immigration reform bill should not be done.

Yeah, it's the CHURCH PEOPLE, like I've been telling you! These are the pond scum behind the DACA DEAL and Amnesty for illegal aliens. CHURCH PEOPLE, their big rich pastors, who under their IRS tax code are NOT supposed to be impacting public policy or influencing legislation. If they want to lobby, then they have to forfeit their tax exempt status and exercise their free speech on their own dime like everyone else. They aren't doing the lord's work, they're doing the devil's work.

It is about the dollars and filling the pews in their congregations and organizations. It makes me sad to know that so many churches and pastors would support illegal immigration amnesty while hurting and sacrificing American lives, jobs, taxpayer dollars. These church leaders are supporting theft, fraud, lying, gangs, drugs, murder, etc. for it hides among the illegal population whether the individual or relatives and acquaintances. It follows illegal aliens. They bring poverty, enormous costs in education, disrupt communities, etc.

Churches send missionaries and their families to other countries, to countries the illegal aliens are citizens of, so they should encourage these people to return home and better their homelands, fight and march in their streets. Many of the vocal pastors and religious leaders are from those states and areas with large Hispanic populations. Texas for one. They have aligned themselves with George Soros, Obama, radicals, socialists, democrats, foreign nations who hate us, anyone who wants to destroy and fundamentally transform America.

Wrapped up in the pleas for amnesty for illegal aliens is also requests for more refugees, extensions or amnesty for those granted TPS.

So sad to see this , as many evangelicals claim to be prolife. If amnesty is granted , prolife legislation will never be passed, and other issues evangelicals claim to be of importance to them will fall by the wayside, as illegal aliens will forever vote for the party giving them handouts and ever more amnesties . Makes me wonder if evangelicals are truly deceived, or just care about lining their collection plates .

All these Churches want is the MONEY.

It is not the "just thing to do". It is as unjust as it gets. It gives illegal aliens special treatment based on national origin in violation of the 14th Amendment, it gives illegal aliens a special path to citizenship in violation of the uniform naturalization clause of the US Constitution, and gives a exemption of law to violators of existing and continuing law based on arbitrary conditions while holding all others accountable to the same law the others broke which violates the ex post fact clause of the US Constitution.

This whole DACA DEAL is a Witch's Brew right out of Satan's Hell.

Any religious leader involved in this is not only incompetent but totally corrupt and every politicians behind it is on the take with the cartels, except for POTUS who is just trying to get something done when there aren't enough votes to get anything done. He's making a mistake and needs to back it up, back off, walk away and never speak the words DACA or DREAMERS again. The only D word he needs to use for the remainder of his Presidency is DEPORT!!

hattiecat, you make many good points. I do think many members are deceived. Maybe some leaders. Filling collection plates matter as well. Church attendees are often given a one sided view, using scripture to persuade, welcoming the stranger, etc. while ignoring that we are to obey the law of the land, not steal, bear false witness, etc. We are givers in the church to the poor, support missions and this can be turned against us on immigration matters. For me personally, this is deeply disappointing.

In my opinion, churches are lining up with the wrong side on this. You are right that those things the church at large cares about will be threatened as illegal aliens turned citizens will vote democrat and the church and Christianity will become an even greater target. Religious liberty for Christians will fall behind as greater accomodation to Islam, Sharia Law, atheism will infiltrate American society, government, laws, education. Illegal aliens and refugees are a tool, a Trojan horse to help achieve this.

It's all about the money. The pro-life movement is about the money. And it's destroying our country. Republicans are the minority because of these pro-life and anti-gay marriage positions. Republicans were neutral on these personal issues for most of our history, then something happened and suddenly there were these movements to use the federal government to discriminate against gay people and exploit pregnant girls and women for breeding purposes. I would like to see the Republican Party return to its roots and fight for personal freedom and individual liberty instead of religious beliefs. Americans have 100% religious freedom to think, believe and do whatever we want. It stops short however as it should with trying to use the force of federal law to invoke those beliefs on someone else who doesn't hold the same belief. It's why we have a separation of church and state in the United States.
