PROGRESO - The mother of three U.S. citizens missing for two weeks in northern Mexico said there is no word of their whereabouts.
She said witnesses saw the entire ordeal happen.
Raquel Alvarado said people saw armed men take her 26-year-old daughter Erica and her sons, 22-year-old Alex and 21-year-old Jose Angel.
They were in El Control, a small town near Matamoros. The three are from Progreso and were visiting their father in Mexico.
Alvarado said witnesses identified the armed men as members of the Hercules group. The group is a police unit that provides security to the mayor of Matamoros.
A spokesman for the U.S. embassy confirmed that U.S. officials are monitoring the case and providing assistance.
Because of the violence across the border, safety is a top concern.
The U.S. State Department has some tips and guidelines.
- Travel to Mexico only if necessary and during the day.
- Use toll roads.
- Keep a low profile and be aware of your surroundings.
- Avoiding any displays of wealth, like expensive-looking jewelry or watches.
- Leave valuables at home.
