Granville, NY – On January 21, New York City Port Authority police arrested Ricardo Martinez-Gomez, 24, after he allegedly sexually assaulted an 8-year-old girl who was attending a sleepover at a friend’s house the night before. Police do not believe the other three girls who were present were assaulted.
Martinez-Gomez was watching television with the girls between 11:00 p.m. and midnight when he reportedly began touching the victim.
Granville Police Sgt. David Williams said: “It looks like it was a crime of opportunity.”
According to police, the victim told her friend’s told mother. That woman is actually Martinez-Gomez's girlfriend.
Rather than calling the police or the victim’s mother, she instead phoned one of Martinez-Gomez's relatives who drove him to another town. That woman may soon be facing charges as well for failing to report the assault.
Martinez-Gomez has a long criminal history in this country and has been deported back to Mexico three previous times.
An alert Port Authority detective is credited with capturing the fugitive.
Det. Warren K. Davis recognized Martinez-Gomez from a picture which had just been distributed hours earlier.
Sgt. Williams told reporters: “[Davis] asked him if he was Martinez-Gomez and he replied ‘no’ he was Gerardo Cruz and showed him the identification.”
However, Det. Davis was aware of the alias and placed Martinez-Gomez under arrest.
Martinez-Gomez has been charged with first-degree sexual abuse and is currently being held in the Washington County Jail.
Martinez-Gomez may also face charges for the falsified Social Security card he had in his possession which identified him as Gerardo Cruz.
