Popular Immigration and Abortion Activist To Be Deported for Drunk Driving

    "The struggle continues."

A prominent pro-immigration and pro-abortion activist was on ordered to be deported, based on her criminal record, by an Arizona judge.

Alejandra Pablos, 33, told the Washington Post that she would appeal Judge Thomas Michael O’Leary's decision to send her back to her native Mexico. She said that her life would be in danger there because of her activism to promote abortion rights.

“La lucha sigue,” she said, meaning, "The struggle continues."

In 2013, Pablos, a legal US resident who was born in Mexico and grew up in Arizona, was convicted of felony drunk driving, endangerment, and possession of drug paraphernalia. She spent two years in detention at an Arizona immigration facility.

Afterward, she moved to Washington, DC, where she worked for the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health in Annandale.

This January, Pablos was arrested and charged with misdemeanor trespassing and obstruction of justice during a protest outside a department of Homeland Security facility in Virginia.

The charges were later dropped, but during a routine check-in with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, she was detained for 43 days. She was then released on bond.

On Tuesday, Pablos petitioned the court for asylum. But O'Leary said she did not qualify because abortion rights activists are not legally protected.

Pablos' supporters, who claim that ICE targeted her over her activism, have launched an online campaign demanding that Republican Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey pardon her for the DUI. The petition had garnered nearly 17,000 signatures as of Friday morning.

Immigration is under federal jurisdiction, and a governor cannot debate a deportation order. But eliminating the reason for the deportation could potentially prevent Pablos' removal, according to the Post.

The mistrust of ICE reflects a growing divide over the agency, and immigration more broadly, in US politics. President Donald Trump has taken a hardline approach to the issue, in keeping with his campaign promises. Meanwhile, some Democrats have taken a far-left position, with the likes of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez calling for ICE to be abolished.
