TL’s stance on immigration debate needs a ‘dose of sense’

I am writing concerning the editorial entitled “Anti-illegal immigration debate gets dose of sense” concerning the recent defeat in Forty Fort of an anti-illegal immigration ordinance similar to the one recently passed in Hazleton. This editorial is simply astounding for the misinformation it presents and the ignorance that it supports and encourages.

In the editorial it states, “Others, however, seemed to understand that the ordinance would promote intolerance.” While the Times Leader obviously does not believe in “intolerance” toward illegal aliens, it is perfectly acceptable for American citizens to be “intolerant” and unwilling to share their rights with those that are in the United States illegally.

It then goes on to state, “We understand that illegal immigrants pose problems in places like Hazleton. But in mostly white communities such as Forty Fort? No.”

Per the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of Hazleton in 2000 was 23,329 with non-Hispanic whites being 94.7 percent of the population. Today, just six short years later, Mayor Barletta and leaders of the Hispanic community estimate the city’s population to be roughly 30,000 if not higher with Hispanics now 30 percent of the population. Furthermore, it is estimated by the Pew Hispanic Center that approximately 30% of the Hispanics in the United States today are here illegally. Hazleton in 2000 was a “mostly white community” like Forty Fort is today without all of the problems resulting from illegal immigration. Thus, Mayor Barletta has been forced to be reactive rather than proactive as Forty Fort could have been, since in 2000 the problems that exist in Hazleton today resulting from illegal aliens could not have been imagined given it was a “mostly white community.”

The editorial then states, “we hope that residents like Gina Zanolini Morrison of Forty Fort protest.

She said during Monday’s meeting that she doesn’t support illegal immigration, but she was ‘upset about the anti-diversity message (the ordinance would be sending)’ and that it would be ‘equating illegal immigration with illegal activities.’”

Before Ms. Morrison and others like her “protest” as the Times Leader “hopes” they would do, they should be aware that under the 1996 Immigration and Nationality Act “(a) Any alien who (1) enters or attempts to enter the United States at any time or place other than as designated by immigration officers, or (2) eludes examination or inspection by immigration officers, or (3) attempts to enter or obtains entry to the United States by a willfully false or misleading representation or the willful concealment of a material fact, shall, for the first commission of any such offense, be fined under title 18, United States Code, or imprisoned not more than 6 months, or both, and, for a subsequent commission of any such offense, be fined under title 18, United States Code, or imprisoned not more than 2 years, or both.”

Therefore, Ms. Morrison and the Times Leader, since illegal entry into the United States subjects the illegal alien to a fine and/or imprisonment regardless of any other activities they may do while here, illegal immigration is an illegal activity.

While the Times Leader believes that the recent defeat of an anti-illegal immigration ordinance in Forty Fort is a “dose of sense,” what does not make sense is the position of the Times Leader in its apparent support of those violating American laws and its furtherance of misinformation and ignorance under the guise of “tolerance” and “diversity.”

    OUR OPINION
Anti-illegal immigration debate gets dose of sense

FORTY FORT RESIDENTS and borough council members give us hope that thoughtful decisions can be made when talk about illegal immigration arises.

On Monday, council members voted down an anti-illegal immigrant ordinance that was modeled after the one recently approved in Hazleton. The vote was 8-1 with the only yes vote from David Williams, the councilman who proposed the ordinance.

Though Forty Fort does not seem to have an illegal immigration problem, Williams said the ordinance would have been a pre-emptive measure.

Some council members who voted against the ordinance didn’t have particularly noble reasons for doing so. Robert Craig, for example, said he feared financial trouble if the borough faced litigation. “Let Hazleton take care of (the legal ramifications), then we’ll approve it.”

Others, however, seemed to understand that the ordinance would promote intolerance.

“(It’s) just something the borough … should not be involved in,” said council President Joseph Chacke.

    Precisely.

We understand that illegal immigrants pose problems in places like Hazleton. But in mostly white communities such as Forty Fort? No. Oddly, municipalities nationwide have suddenly determined that illegal immigration is Job 1.

Could their motivation stem from the largely positive press that Hazleton and its mayor, Lou Barletta, have received?

As other communities discuss creating similar legislation, we hope that residents like Gina Zanolini Morrison of Forty Fort protest.

She said during Monday’s meeting that she doesn’t support illegal immigration, but she was “upset about the anti-diversity message (the ordinance would be sending)” and that it would be “equating illegal immigration with illegal activities.”

Politicians, dizzy with the glee of becoming heroes to their constituents, need to know there are people such as Morrison who see through their copycat façade.
