Judge orders Hispanic woman turned over to immigration officials

A federal judge today sentenced a Hispanic woman arrested along with her husband transporting seven illegal Chinese nationals to 3 1/2 months in prison.

Clara Rodriguez, 33, pleaded guilty to being in the country illegally and will be turned over to immigration officials on Jan. 2, Chief U.S. District Judge Curtis L. Collier said.

Ms. Rodriguez has been in custody since her arrest Sept. 20.

Ms. Rodriguez was arrested on Interstate 75 in Bradley County, Tenn., along with her husband, Venancio Perez, 44, in a van transporting seven Chinese nationals.

Authorities said Mr. Perez is awaiting trial on charges of human trafficking.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Anderson said there is no evidence that Ms. Rodriguez knew Mr. Perez was transporting the Chinese immigrants illegally.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Anderson said there is no evidence that Ms. Rodriguez knew Mr. Perez was transporting the Chinese immigrants illegally

Of course not.....the poor woman simply thought it was her husband's bowling league shooting a cruise to pick up some coronas and mandarin after a big win. Easy enough mistake for any of us to make............ :roll:

Bradley County, Tennessee is considered a Sanctuary County by many residents. This is good news. The US Attorney is another matter. :roll:

A Hispanic woman arrested in September along with her husband transporting seven Chinese nationals soon will be reunited with her children in Mexico, court officials said Thursday.

Clara Rodriguez, 33, pleaded guilty Thursday to being in the country illegally and received a 3 1/2 month sentence.

Chief U.S. District Judge Curtis L. Collier said Ms. Rodriguez will be turned over to immigration officials Jan. 2 to begin the deportation process.

"Given that the Christmas holidays are coming up and there will be some difficulty transporting the defendant, the court will impose a sentence that will place her in the custody of immigration officials at the beginning of the new year and out of federal custody," Judge Collier said.

Records show Ms. Rodriguez was arrested Sept. 20, along with her husband, Venancio Perez, 44, on Interstate 75 in Bradley County, Tenn., with seven Chinese nationals in the back of their van.

Mr. Perez was charged with human trafficking, but Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Anderson said there was not enough evidence to charge Ms. Rodriguez with the same offense.

"There was no evidence of any knowledge on her part," Mr. Anderson said.

Defense lawyer Leslie Cory said Ms. Rodriguez has two children, ages 13 and 14, who are anxious to see their mother again.

"She is a devoted mother," Ms. Cory said. "Her children, who are U.S. citizens, have returned to Mexico and are awaiting her there."

According to an affidavit by federal immigration Agent Mark Eisenbeis, Mr. Perez initially told authorities the occupants were his wife's relatives, but Ms. Rodriguez said she did not know the occupants and was not related to them.

During questioning, Mr. Perez later admitted that he was transporting the Chinese immigrants from Houston to New York for $400 each, the affidavit states.

Mr. Perez said he was contacted by a Cuban or Puerto Rican man and instructed to pick up the immigrants at a hotel in Houston and drive them to New York, Agent Eisenbeis wrote.

Once in New York, Mr. Perez was supposed to call a telephone number to find out where to deliver them, the affidavit states.

Mr. Anderson said Mr. Perez has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.

3 1/2 months prison time is not near enough time to pay for human smuggling.Twelve years at hard labor would be about right,but we probably won't even see the 3 1/2 months fully served.

I'm confused. How do U.S. citizens "return to Mexico' or any other country?

Wouldn't they have "traveled", 'gone", "relocated", or "moved" to?

To say that they have "returned to" implies that they went back from whence they came......doesn't it?

Interesting choice of words on the attorney's part, I think. :?
